Lane change steps — Iowa Permit Test
Lane change steps on the Iowa permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Only change lanes one lane at a time.
Crossing two lanes at once gives drivers in the middle lane no time to see you coming.
Only change lanes one lane at a time.
Before changing lanes, confirm there is space to enter the lane and yield to any vehicles already in it.
The cars already in that lane have the right to stay there. You must fit in without forcing them aside.

Change lanes without slowing down, unless you are moving into a slower lane of traffic.
Slowing down while you move over can make a car in the new lane run into the back of you.
When you do make your lane change, do it carefully but without slowing down unless you are moving into a slower lane of traffic.
When you turn your head to check blind spots, keep the steering wheel straight; people tend to turn their arms the way their head turns.
If your arms follow your head, the car drifts into the next lane before you have checked it.
When you turn your head to check the blind spots, make sure you keep the steering wheel straight;
Before changing lanes, check the far lane, if there is one, as someone there may be moving into the lane you want.
Two cars can move into the same empty lane at once, one from each side, and hit each other.
Be sure to check the far lane, if there is one, as someone in that lane may be planning to move into the same lane you want to enter.
On the test
You need to move two lanes to the left. How should you do it?
Move over one lane at a time. Crossing two lanes at once gives drivers in the middle lane no time to see you coming. Iowa Driver's License Manual, p.44: “Only change lanes one lane at a time.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
