Regulatory sign pictures — Iowa Permit Test
Regulatory sign pictures on the Iowa permit test — 8 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A speed limit sign shows the maximum speed allowed in ideal driving conditions.
The posted limit is the fastest you may go on a good day, not the speed you must drive in bad weather.
Speed limit signs indicate the maximum or minimum safe speed that is allowed.
A stop sign means you must come to a full stop and wait until crossing vehicles and the crosswalk are clear.
A rolling stop gives you no time to see a car or walker crossing in front of you.
A stop sign means you must come to a full stop and wait until crossing vehicles and the cross-walk are clear before proceeding.
A yield sign means slow down and yield the right of way to traffic in the intersection or roadway you are entering.
Cars already on the road have the right to go first, so you fit in behind them and do not cut them off.
A yield sign means you must slow down and yield the right of way to traffic in the intersection you are crossing or roadway you are entering.
A keep right divided highway sign means the road ahead is divided and directs traffic around an island or barrier.
Passing the island on the wrong side would put you in front of oncoming cars.
The road ahead is divided. This sign directs traffic around an island or barrier.
A one-way sign means traffic moves only in the direction of the arrow.
Driving against the arrow puts you head-on with every car on that street.
Traffic moves only in the direction of the arrow.
A do not enter sign marks a roadway opening you must not enter.
Going in past this sign would put you on a road where traffic comes straight at you.
You will see this sign at roadway openings you are not to enter.
Do not enter signs are found at exit ramps, crossovers on divided roadways, and many places on one-way roads.
These are the spots where a wrong turn sends you against traffic, so the sign stands there to stop you.
You will see them at exit ramps, in crossovers on divided roadways, and at numerous locations on one-way roads.
A wrong way sign means you made a wrong turn into a lane of oncoming traffic; get off the traveled road, stop, and turn around as quickly and safely as you can.
Every second in that lane you face cars coming at you, so get out of their path fast but safely.
You made a wrong turn and have entered a lane of oncoming traffic.
On the test
What does this sign tell you?
The fastest speed allowed in ideal conditions. The posted limit is the fastest you may go on a good day, not the speed you must drive in bad weather. Iowa Driver's License Manual, p.8: “Speed limit signs indicate the maximum or minimum safe speed that is allowed.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
