Reversible lanes — Iowa Permit Test
Reversible lanes on the Iowa permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Reversible lanes carry traffic one way at some times and the other way at other times, and are usually marked by double-dashed yellow lines.
The same lane may be yours in the morning and the other side's at night. The lines warn you to check first.
These lanes are usually marked by double-dashed yellow lines.
Over a reversible lane, a green arrow means you can use the lane beneath it.
The lights tell you which way the lane runs right now. Using it the wrong way puts you head on with traffic.
A green arrow means you can use the lane beneath it;
Over a reversible lane, a red X means you may not use that lane.
A red X means traffic in that lane is coming toward you, so you must stay out of it.
a red “X” means you may not.
A flashing yellow X over a reversible lane means the lane is only for turning.
Cars from both ways may use that lane to turn. Driving straight in it can lead to a head-on crash.
A flashing yellow “X” means the lane is only for turning.
A steady yellow X over a reversible lane means its use is changing, and you should move out of it as soon as it is safe.
Soon cars will be allowed to come the other way in that lane. Get out before they do.
A steady yellow “X” means that the use of the lane is changing and you should move out of it as soon as it is safe to do so.
On the test
What lines usually mark a reversible lane?
Double-dashed yellow lines. The same lane may be yours in the morning and the other side's at night. The lines warn you to check first. Iowa Driver's License Manual, p.15: “These lanes are usually marked by double-dashed yellow lines.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
