Roundabout driving — Iowa Permit Test
Roundabout driving on the Iowa permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Traffic in a roundabout travels counterclockwise around a center island.
Everyone going the same way around the island means no one meets a car head-on.
Roundabouts are intersections that direct traffic in a counterclockwise direction around a center island.
Roundabouts have no stop signs or traffic signals; yield signs and pavement markings guide traffic.
Cars keep moving slowly instead of stopping, so you need to watch the yield signs and lines yourself.
They have no stop signs or traffic signals.
As you approach a roundabout, slow to the posted advisory speed and yield to anyone in the crosswalk.
People cross right at the edge of the roundabout, and you need to be slow enough to stop for them.
Slow down to the posted advisory speed and yield to anyone in the crosswalk.
When entering a roundabout, yield to vehicles already in it, wait for a gap, then merge.
Cars already going around have the right-of-way. Pulling in front of them causes a side crash.
As you approach the yield line markings, yield to vehicles in the roundabout.
Once inside a roundabout, keep going until you reach your street and avoid stopping.
A car that stops in the circle can be hit from behind by traffic that expects it to keep moving.
Continue through the roundabout until you reach your street. Avoid stopping in the roundabout.
To leave a roundabout, signal, then exit to your right, and yield to anyone in the crosswalk.
Your signal tells waiting drivers and walkers that you are leaving, so they know when it is safe to go.
Signal, then exit the roundabout to your right.
On the test
Which way does traffic travel in a roundabout?
Counterclockwise. Everyone going the same way around the island means no one meets a car head-on. Iowa Driver's License Manual, p.54: “Roundabouts are intersections that direct traffic in a counterclockwise direction around a center island.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
