Traffic signal lights — Iowa Permit Test

Traffic signal lights on the Iowa permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

At a solid red light you must come to a complete stop.

A red light means cross traffic has the right to go. If you roll on, you drive into their path.

Solid red Come to a complete stop.

Iowa Driver's License Manual, p.11

Treat a flashing red light the same as a stop sign.

A flashing red light often hangs where a signal is broken or traffic is light. You still stop fully, then go when it is clear.

Flashing red Treat it the same as a stop sign.

Iowa Driver's License Manual, p.11

At a solid yellow light, do not enter the intersection if you can stop safely; if you cannot stop safely, go through with caution.

Yellow means red is coming. Stopping when you can keeps you from being in the middle when cross traffic starts.

Do not enter the intersection if you can stop safely.

Iowa Driver's License Manual, p.11

A flashing yellow light means proceed with caution, yielding to vehicles and pedestrians, and go when it is safe.

A flashing yellow light does not give you the road. Others may be crossing, so you slow and look before you go.

Flashing yellow Proceed with caution. Yield to vehicles and pedestrians and proceed when it is safe.

Iowa Driver's License Manual, p.11

A solid green light means go, but only when the intersection is clear; yield to vehicles and pedestrians still in it.

When a light changes, some cars and walkers may still be caught in the middle. Let them get out before you move in.

Go, but only when the intersection is clear.

Iowa Driver's License Manual, p.11

You must follow directions from law enforcement, highway workers or school crossing guards who are directing traffic.

A person directing traffic can see a crash, a closed road or children crossing that a signal cannot. Do what they tell you.

In addition to traffic signals, traffic control can be provided by law enforcement, highway personnel, or school crossing guards. You must follow directions from these persons.

On the test

What must you do at a solid red traffic light?

Come to a complete stop. A red light means cross traffic has the right to go. If you roll on, you drive into their path. Iowa Driver's License Manual, p.11: “Solid red Come to a complete stop.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
