Barricades — Idaho Permit Test

Barricades on the Idaho permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Barricades are either red and white, which is permanent, or orange and white, which is temporary, and whatever their color the instructions they give drivers are the same.

The color says how long the closure will last, not what to do about it, which is why both are read the same way.

Barricades are either red and white (permanent) or orange and white (temporary)

A V-shaped pattern on a barricade means the road is closed and traffic can proceed no further.

It is the one pattern that gives no way past, which is why it looks different from the ones that do.

The V-shaped pattern on this barricade means that the road is closed and traffic can proceed no further

Lines on a barricade that angle down to the left mean traffic must pass the barricade on the left side.

The stripes point the way past, and reading them backward sends a car into the closed lane.

The lines on this barricade angle down to the left, indicating that traffic must pass the barricade on the left side

Lines on a barricade that angle down to the right mean traffic must pass the barricade on the right side.

Same convention, other way round. The stripes lean toward the side that is still open.

The lines on this barricade angle down to the right, indicating that traffic must pass the barricade on the right side

Barricades may have flashing lights on them, especially at night.

The stripes disappear after dark, so the light is what is left to mark where the road stops.

Barricades are placed in the road as a warning to drivers when a lane or road is closed to traffic.

They are put there for the driver, not for the work crew, which is why one of the three types is always facing you.

one of three types of barricades will be placed in the road as a warning to drivers

On the test

What is the difference between a red-and-white and an orange-and-white barricade?

One marks a permanent closure and one a temporary closure. The color says how long the closure will last, not what to do about it, which is why both are read the same way. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.54: “Barricades are either red and white (permanent) or orange and white (temporary)”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
