Idaho Permit Practice Test — DMV Written Test, 40 Questions

Free 10-question Idaho permit practice test, then full 40-question tests like the DMV exam (34 to pass), each question cited to the July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook.

The exam

The Idaho Transportation Department knowledge test is 40 questions, and 34 correct is a pass. Everything on it comes out of July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook. Officially it is the knowledge test; most people call it the written test, or the permit test.

Idaho does not state the score that passes its knowledge test directly: 34 of 40 follows from what it does state (the Idaho Driver’s Manual, printed p.32: “you can miss up to six (6) questions before failing the test”).

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

Ask a question about Idaho road law

Easier than searching the manual: ask in your own words — how far from a fire hydrant you may park, when you must stop for a school bus — and the answer comes from July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook or Idaho’s code, with the page or the section it is in. When neither says, the answer says so rather than guess. Or tick Nationwide and compare every state on one question.

What Idaho tests

99 concepts, 791 separate rules. Each one is a page of its own.

Questions from the Idaho test

What happens to an out-of-state license when a driver applies for an Idaho one?

It is surrendered to the Idaho office at the time of application. One person is meant to have one record. A second card from another state is a second record, and a suspension can hide behind it. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.12: “you must surrender any driver's license or identification card (ID card) issued to you from another state”

What does the star on an Idaho Star Card show?

That the card meets the federal Real ID security standards. The star is the whole difference. A card without it is a full Idaho license and still will not get you through airport security. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.13: “It is an Idaho driver's license or identification (ID) card that adds a star to show it is in compliance with the federal Real ID security standards”

When must an Idaho driver have their license with them?

Whenever they are operating a motor vehicle. An officer who cannot see the card has only your word for the privilege behind it. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.13: “You must carry your driver's license when operating a motor vehicle”

Which office issues an Idaho driver's license?

The county sheriff's driver's license office. The state keeps the record, but the counter is the county's. Turning up at a state office gets nothing issued. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.14: “ID cards, and instruction permits are issued through the county sheriff's driver's license offices”

Which class of Idaho license lets a driver operate non-commercial motor vehicles?

Class D. Every rule about the paper you sit and the vehicle you drive follows from which class you are applying for. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.15: “Class D driver's licenses allow drivers to operate non- commercial motor vehicles”

From what age may a student hold an Idaho Driver Training permit?

14 and a half. The permit is what gets a student into the car with an instructor. Nothing else at that age will. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.15: “Driver Training Permits (DT) allow anyone 14 1/2 and under 17 years of age to attend any public school or private driver training program”

Who may accompany the holder of a Class D Instruction Permit?

A licensed adult who is 18 years of age or older. The permit is practice, not a license. The adult beside you is the licensed driver in the car. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.16: “when accompanied by an adult (someone who is 18 years of age or older) who holds a valid driver's license”

What is the restriction on an Idaho driver who is under 16 years of age?

They may drive in daylight only, without a licensed adult of 21 beside them. Night is where a new driver's inexperience costs most, so the youngest drivers keep to daylight or take an adult with them. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.16: “Daylight only travel is allowed unless you have a valid licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age sitting in the front seat beside you”

Which foreign drivers are exempt from Idaho's knowledge test?

None of them. Idaho law is the one thing another country's test cannot have covered, so everybody sits that paper. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.17: “No foreign drivers are exempt from the knowledge test”

What must an applicant already hold to apply for a Motorcycle Instruction Permit?

A valid Idaho driver's license. The permit is an addition to a license, not a way around one. A rider learns the road first and the machine second. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.18: “You must have a valid Idaho driver's license to apply for an MIP”

Who must complete the Graduated Driver's License program?

Anyone under 17 who has not been issued an Idaho license. The program is a staircase. Skipping a step is not a shortcut to the license, it is a reason to be refused one. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.19: “Anyone under 17 years of age who has not been issued a driver’s license in Idaho must successfully complete an approved driver’s training program and comply with the requirements of the GDL program.”

How long must an Idaho license have been expired before its holder counts as a new applicant?

25 months or more. New applicant is a status, not a first time. A driver of thirty years can be one after a long enough gap. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.21: “Have an Idaho driver's license that has been expired for 25 months or more”

Where does an applicant's social security number appear after verification?

Nowhere on the license or ID card. The number is checked and then kept off the card, so a lost license does not hand it to whoever finds it. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.24: “It will not be printed on your Idaho driver's license or ID card”

Who provides the statement when a medical condition could affect an applicant's driving?

The applicant's physician. The county agent is not a doctor. Where the question is medical, the answer has to come from one. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.25: “you may be required to provide a statement from your physician certifying that you can safely operate a motor vehicle”

What does a liability signer take on when an applicant under 18 is licensed?

Legal responsibility for the applicant's actions as a driver. Somebody has to carry the liability a minor cannot, and signing is how they take it on. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.26: “The signer assumes legal responsibility for your actions as a driver”

From what age may an Idaho applicant request the DONOR designation?

15 years of age. The designation is read at the worst possible moment, so it has to be on the card before it is needed. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.27: “If you are 15 years of age or older, you may request to have the “DONOR” designation appear on your driver's license or ID card”

How does an Idaho driver change the name shown on their license?

By applying for a duplicate, or changing it at renewal. The name on the card has to match the name on the record, and a duplicate is how the card catches up. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.29: “you must apply for a duplicate or, if you are eligible, you may make the change as you renew your driver's license”

How far ahead of expiration may an Idaho driver aged 21 or older renew in person?

Up to 25 months. The window is long so a renewal does not have to wait for a trip home or a free afternoon near the deadline. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.30: “you may renew your Idaho Class D or CDL driver's license in person up to 25 months before the expiration date”

When does an Idaho driver's license expire?

On the holder's birthday. The date is personal rather than fixed, so there is no renewal season to miss, only a birthday. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.31: “Your Idaho driver's license will expire on your birthday as indicated on your license”

How many questions does the Idaho Class D knowledge test have?

40 questions. Forty is the size of the paper. It is what the pool has to be bigger than, and what every other number about the test is a fraction of. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.32: “The knowledge test consists of 40 questions; you can miss up to six (6) questions before failing the test”

What is Idaho's minimum vision standard for a driver's license?

20/40 in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses. One eye meeting the standard is enough, and glasses count toward it, so the test is of what you can see rather than of your eyes. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.32: “you must meet a minimum standard of 20/40 vision in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses”

What is a passing score on the Idaho skills test?

Twelve or fewer errors. The skills test is scored on errors rather than on questions, so the number to know is a ceiling and not a target. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.33: “Twelve or fewer errors is a passing score”

What is taking a vehicle without the owner's consent, with no intent to steal it?

A misdemeanor. Borrowing without asking is its own offense, and meaning to bring the car back is not a defense to it. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.38: “without intent to steal the vehicle, will be guilty of a misdemeanor”

How many independent brake systems must an Idaho vehicle have?

Two, so that one still works if the other fails. The second system exists for the day the first one lets go, which is the day there is no time to stop and think. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.38: “All vehicles must have two brake systems designed so that if one fails the other still works”

Up to what age must a child ride in an approved child safety seat in Idaho?

6 years of age or younger. A grown-up's seat belt crosses a small child at the neck and the stomach, which is why the seat is a different piece of equipment. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.41: “Idaho law requires anyone carrying children 6 years of age or younger in a non-commercial motor vehicle to properly protect children in approved child car safety seats”

Who must wear a safety belt in an Idaho vehicle fitted with them?

All occupants. It applies to everyone in the car, not just the driver, and a loose passenger in a crash hits whoever is in front of them. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.41: “Idaho law requires all occupants to wear safety belts and/or shoulder straps when riding in a motor vehicle equipped with these devices by the factory”

Who may use red or blue emergency lights in Idaho?

Emergency vehicles only. Those two colors mean an emergency is happening. On an ordinary car they are a lie other drivers act on. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.42: “Red or blue emergency lights. These are authorized for emergency vehicles only”

When must Idaho headlamps and tail lamps be lit?

From sunset to sunrise, and when visibility is poor. The lamps are as much about being seen as about seeing, and dusk is when a driver stops noticing they are needed. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.43: “Headlamps and tail lamps must be lighted from sunset to sunrise and when poor visibility makes them necessary for safety”

Who else may provide traffic control besides signals, signs and markings?

Law enforcement officers, highway personnel and school crossing guards. A person directing traffic outranks the paint and the lights, because they can see what the equipment cannot. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.44: “Traffic control may also be provided by law enforcement officers, highway personnel, or school crossing guards. You must obey these directions”

Where must a driver stop at this sign when a stop line is marked?

At the stop line. The line is placed where a driver can see along the road being entered. Stopping past it means stopping where you cannot see. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.44: “When approaching a stop sign, you must stop at a clearly marked stop line”

How are Idaho work zones commonly identified?

By orange signs, cones, drums, barricades or flashing arrow panels. The whole layout of the road can change overnight in a work zone, so the markings are what tell you it has. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.46: “These are commonly identified with orange signs, cones, drums, barricades, or flashing arrow panels”

What must a driver do about directions from a school safety patrol official?

Follow them. A patrol is standing in the road because children are about to be, and their signal is the only warning of it. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.48: “You must follow any directions issued by a school safety patrol official while driving your motor vehicle”

What does this sign warn a driver about?

A road ahead that crosses the one being traveled. A car coming across your path arrives from the side, where a driver looking straight ahead will not find it. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.49: “There is another road ahead which crosses the road you are on”

What kind of information does this sign give?

Directional and distance information. Guide signs answer where and how far. Knowing the scheme means you can find the one you want at a glance. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.53: “Guide signs are either white on green for directional and distance”

What is the difference between a red-and-white and an orange-and-white barricade?

One marks a permanent closure and one a temporary closure. The color says how long the closure will last, not what to do about it, which is why both are read the same way. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.54: “Barricades are either red and white (permanent) or orange and white (temporary)”

Where must a driver stop at a steady red circular signal?

Before the stop line, crosswalk or intersection. The three places are named in the order you meet them, and stopping past the first one you come to is stopping in the wrong place. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.55: “Come to a complete stop before you reach the stop line, crosswalk, or intersection”

How is a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon arranged?

Two red lenses over a single yellow lens. It does not look like an ordinary signal, and a driver who reads it as one will not know what the dark face means. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.56: “The Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (sometimes called HAWK) consists of two red lenses positioned over a single yellow lens”

What do pavement markings tell a driver?

Where it is not safe to pass and where lane changes are barred. The paint carries as much law as the signs do, and it is there at every moment rather than at one point. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.58: “tell you where it is not safe to pass other vehicles, where you may not change lanes”

How close to the nearest rail must a driver stop at an Idaho railroad crossing?

Within 50 feet but no less than 15 feet. Closer than 15 feet is inside the swing of a train, and further than 50 feet is too far back to see along the track. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.60: “you should do so within 50 feet but no less than 15 feet from the nearest rail of the crossing”

Who has the right-of-way at an Idaho roundabout?

Vehicles already in the circle. Traffic already going round has nowhere to stop, so the driver waiting at the edge is the one who can. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.62: “In a roundabout intersection, all drivers must yield the right-of-way to vehicles that are already in the circle”

What does a thru-turn intersection prohibit?

Direct left turns. The left turn across oncoming traffic is the movement that causes the worst crashes, so this design removes it. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.63: “A thru-turn is a method of managing intersection traffic by prohibiting direct left turns”

What does Idaho's basic rule law require of a driver?

To drive at a speed that is reasonable and prudent at all times. The posted number is a ceiling for a good day. On ice or in fog the safe speed is lower, and the basic rule is what says so. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.68: “Idaho law has a basic rule requiring you to drive at a speed that is “reasonable and prudent” at all times”

What is a flashing red traffic indication the same as?

A stop sign. It is the one signal display that is not about timing at all, so treating it as a slow-down gets it wrong. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.69: “STOP for any flashing red indication; it is the same as a stop sign”

When must a driver stop for a school bus in Idaho?

When it displays flashing red lights while loading or unloading. Children cross in front of the bus where the driver of it can see them and you cannot. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.70: “You must stop when approaching a school bus that is displaying flashing red lights while stopped to pick up or drop off children”

How may an Idaho driver signal that they are slowing or stopping?

With the brake-operated lights, or with an arm signal. The driver behind is reading your lights, and a brake light that has failed leaves them nothing to read. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.71: “You may use either the brake- operated signal lights on the rear of your vehicle or an arm signal”

How far before turning must an Idaho driver signal in a business or residential area?

At least 100 feet. The distance is short in town because speeds are; on a highway the same warning takes five seconds of travel. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.72: “Signals must start at least 100 feet (in business or residential areas) or five seconds (on freeways or highways) before you turn or change lanes”

Where does Idaho law require a driver to stay in most cases?

As far to the right side of the road as possible. Keeping right leaves the rest of the road for whoever is going faster, which is where passing has to happen. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.74: “the law requires that you stay as far to the right side of the road as possible”

What does the handbook say about right-of-way?

It is something to be given, not taken. Two drivers who both believe it is theirs will meet in the middle, so the law says which one gives it. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.74: “Always remember that right-of- way is something to be given, not taken”

When should an Idaho driver pass another vehicle?

When it will not interfere with oncoming traffic or that vehicle. A pass that goes wrong ends head on, and the closing speed is both cars added together. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.76: “do so only when you won't interfere with oncoming traffic or the vehicle you're passing”

What must a driver not do when they meet a funeral procession?

Drive between or join the vehicles in the formation. The procession is a single unit, and a car cutting into it separates drivers who are following the one in front. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.78: “do not drive between or join vehicles in the formation unless you are authorized to do so by a police officer”

How many vehicles must be delayed before a slow vehicle must pull off an Idaho two-lane highway?

Three or more. Three cars is where a line starts forming, and a line is where somebody decides to pass on a blind bend. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.79: “delaying three or more other vehicles in a rural area or on a two-lane highway must turn off the road wherever safe to let the other vehicles pass”

What is Idaho's minimum recommended following distance rule?

Three seconds. It is a minimum rather than a target, and it is what leaves room for the car ahead to stop hard. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.79: “The three-second following distance rule is the minimum recommended safest procedure to use”

How close to the curb must an Idaho driver park?

Within 18 inches. A car parked further out is still in the lane, and one facing the wrong way has to cross traffic to get there. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.80: “you must park parallel to and within 18 inches of the curb or edge of the roadway”

When should a driver check behind the vehicle before backing?

Before getting in. A small child behind the car is invisible from the mirror and from the seat, and the only way to know is to have looked. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.82: “Check behind the vehicle before you get in. Children or small objects are hard to see from the driver's seat”

What is the maximum speed on an Idaho urban interstate highway where designated?

65 miles per hour. The two numbers are different because a rural interstate has fewer exits and fewer places for traffic to join. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.83: “vehicles may travel at speeds up to 80 miles per hour on rural interstates, and up to 65 on urban interstate highways, unless otherwise posted”

What should a driver do before getting into their vehicle?

Look in front of and behind it. Neither the mirrors nor the seat shows the ground right against the car, and that is where a small child would be. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.87: “always look in front and back of it to see if there is a child or obstacle you might run over”

What share of highway crashes does driver error cause?

More than 90%. Almost nothing on the road breaks by itself. What fails is a decision somebody made. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.86: “Driver error causes more than 90% of highway crashes”

Where should a driver's hands be on the steering wheel?

At approximately nine o'clock and three o'clock. Hands opposite each other can turn the wheel a long way in one movement, which is what an emergency needs. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.89: “driving with both hands placed on opposite sides of the steering wheel at approximately the nine o'clock and three o'clock positions”

Which of these does the handbook list as a driving distraction?

Looking for things inside your vehicle. A few seconds is enough. The hazard does not wait for a driver to finish what they are doing. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.91: “Looking for things inside your vehicle”

What is text messaging while driving in Idaho?

An illegal act, treated as an infraction. Sending a message takes the eyes off the road for as long as it takes to type it, which is longer than a driver thinks. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.92: “text messaging) while driving is illegal and considered an infraction”

What should a drowsy driver do?

Pull off at the first rest stop and take a nap. There is no way to drive through drowsiness. The only thing that works is sleep. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.93: “Stop driving when you feel drowsy. Pull off the highway at the first rest stop or service area”

What happens to a vehicle left unattended on the traveled portion of an Idaho highway?

It is subject to immediate removal by towing. A car left in a lane is a stationary object in a place where everything else is moving fast. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.93: “Unattended vehicles on the traveled portion of a highway at any time create a potential danger to public safety and are subject to immediate removal (towing)”

Who is Idaho's Alive at 25 course offered to?

Drivers aged 15 through 24. That age group is over-represented in Idaho's crash figures, which is why the course is aimed at it. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.94: “Alive at 25 is a defensive driving course offered for those who are 15 through 24 years old”

What must a driver do when an emergency vehicle approaches with siren and lights?

Pull immediately to the nearest curb or right edge and stop. The emergency vehicle needs a predictable road, and every driver moving right in the same way is what gives it one. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.95: “you must immediately pull to the nearest curb or the edge on the right side of the roadway and stop”

What must a driver do when a pedestrian is crossing where there is no painted crosswalk?

Stop and let them finish crossing. Being right does not help anyone once somebody is already in the road in front of the car. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.96: “You must stop and let them finish crossing, even if you technically have the right-of-way”

What should a driver do before getting into a vehicle parked in a residential area?

Walk around the vehicle. A child crouched by a wheel is invisible from every mirror and from the seat itself. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.97: “Before getting into your vehicle, walk around it to be sure no children are playing near it whom you may not be able to see from the driver’s seat.”

What rights do horseback riders have on Idaho roads?

The same rights as motor vehicle drivers. A horse and rider on the road are traffic, not an obstacle, and they have as much right to be there as a car. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.97: “They also have the same rights as motor vehicle drivers and must obey the same rules”

What rights do bicyclists have on Idaho roadways?

The same rights as drivers. A cyclist is entitled to the lane, and a driver who treats them as an obstruction is the one breaking the rule. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.98: “Bicyclists are legally allowed to ride on all Idaho roadways and have the same rights as drivers, and are required to ride with the flow of traffic”

What rights do motorcyclists have on Idaho highways?

The same rights and responsibilities as other highway users. A motorcycle is a vehicle in traffic, entitled to its place in the lane like anything else. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.103: “Motorcyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as other highway users, and they must obey the same traffic laws”

What does the handbook say about larger vehicles?

They have larger blind spots and take longer to stop. Everything a large vehicle does takes more space than a driver behind it expects. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.104: “The larger their blind spots”

What number does a driver dial for Idaho travel information?

Dial 511. Idaho's mountain passes close without notice, and 511 is where that is known before you set out. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.107: “For travel information, dial “511” or go to 511.idaho.gov for up-to-date information on:”

How should a driver control speed on a long mountain descent?

By using a lower gear. Riding the brakes down a long grade heats them until they stop working, and there is no warning before that. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.107: “Use a lower gear to control speeds while going down long hills”

What does the handbook advise about a small animal in the road?

Do not try to dodge it unless it is safe to do so. Swerving for an animal is how drivers leave the road, and the car is worth more than the swerve saved. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.107: “Don't try to dodge it unless you are sure it is safe to do so”

Who has the right-of-way when livestock are being moved across an Idaho highway?

The livestock. A herd being moved cannot be hurried, and the law gives it the road until it is across. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.108: “Horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and other livestock under controlled movement over a highway or road have the right- of-way in Idaho”

How fast should a driver travel at night?

Slowly enough to stop within the distance they can see. The headlights set the limit, not the speed sign, and outrunning them means arriving at a hazard already too late. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.108: “always drive slowly enough so you can stop within the distance you can see ahead”

Why does the handbook say to use extra caution near a snowplow?

Because the plow forces snow up and reduces visibility behind. The plow makes its own whiteout, and a driver close behind it drives into a wall of snow. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.109: “snowplow blades force snow up and off the road, potentially causing blizzard-like conditions and reduced visibility for drivers following too closely”

Which beams are best in daytime fog, smoke, dust or rain?

The low beams, which are best in these conditions. High beams bounce off fog and dust straight back into the driver's eyes. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.110: “Low beams are best at such times”

When are Idaho roads most dangerous in the rain?

At the start of a light rain. The most slippery moment is the first few minutes, before the rain has washed the oil away. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.111: “roads are more dangerous at the start of a light rain when road oil and water mix to form a greasy film on the road”

What should a driver do at a flooded roadway?

Turn around and find another route. The road under the water may not be there any more, and there is no way to see that from the car. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.112: “DO NOT DRIVE through flooded areas. If you see a flooded roadway ahead, turn around and find another route to your destination”

What does the handbook name as the keys to safety on slippery roads?

Slower speeds, gentler stops, longer gaps. Every input has to be softer, because the grip that would absorb a sharp one is not there. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.113: “the keys to safety are slower speeds, gentler stops and turns, and longer following distances”

What does the handbook suggest carrying to generate traction under the wheels?

A sack of sand or cat litter. A car stuck on ice needs something for the tires to bite, and there is rarely anything to hand on a mountain road. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.114: “A small sack of sand or cat litter for generating traction under the wheels”

Which wheels lose grip in most skids?

The rear wheels. Knowing which end has gone is what tells a driver which way to steer. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.115: “In most skids, the rear wheels lose their grip on the pavement and slide left or right”

How should a driver use anti-lock brakes in an emergency stop?

Apply continuous pressure. Pumping switches the system off and on, so it spends the stop starting over instead of working. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.116: “apply continuous pressure on the brake pedal. Do Not Pump the Brake Pedal as this will defeat the system’s design, reduce the effectiveness of the ABS, and increase the distance required to stop the vehicle.”

Why does the handbook say to make a broken-down car visible?

Because many crashes occur when a stalled vehicle is not seen. A stopped car in a lane is the one thing nobody arriving at speed is looking for. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.117: “Many crashes occur because a driver didn't see a stalled vehicle”

What two choices does the handbook give for avoiding a crash?

Changing direction by steering, or changing speed. Naming the two options in advance is what lets a driver pick one in the time available.
