Renewals and duplicates — Idaho Permit Test

Renewals and duplicates on the Idaho permit test — 8 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A driver 21 years of age or older may renew an Idaho Class D license in person up to 25 months before it expires.

The window is long so a renewal does not have to wait for a trip home or a free afternoon near the deadline.

you may renew your Idaho Class D or CDL driver's license in person up to 25 months before the expiration date

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.30

A renewal is valid for either four years or eight years, or to the end of your lawful stay in the United States.

Two lengths are offered, and the shorter one applies to anyone whose permission to be here runs out first.

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.30

A driver between 21 and 62 years of age may choose the eight-year renewal.

The longer term stops at 62 because vision and health are screened more often after that.

If you are between 21 and 62 years of age, you may choose the eight-year renewal for your Class D or commercial driver’s license.

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.30

Vision screening is required at every renewal, and an examiner may ask for a Vision Exam form to be completed by an eye doctor if it is failed.

Eyesight changes quietly between renewals, which is why it is checked every time rather than once.

Vision screening is required at all renewals and, if failed, examiner may require a Vision Exam form to be filled out by an eye doctor/specialist.

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.30

A license expired 25 months or more means taking all applicable knowledge and skills tests again.

Past that point the department treats the holder as somebody who has not been tested, because in practice they have not.

you will be required to take all applicable knowledge and skills test(s)

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.30

A lost, damaged or destroyed Idaho credential can be replaced with a duplicate applied for at any county office or online.

Any county will do, so a driver who loses a license away from home does not have to go back for it.

you may obtain a duplicate by applying at any county driver's license office or online

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.30

If you find the lost license after a duplicate has been issued, the old one must be destroyed or surrendered, and the duplicate is the one to keep.

Two cards in circulation is two records to argue over, and only one of them is current.

it must be destroyed, or surrendered to the county driver's license office

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.31

An Idaho resident whose credential is lost, stolen, mutilated, destroyed or confiscated must visit a county DMV office and declare the reason for applying for a duplicate.

The reason matters: a stolen card is a different problem from a worn one, and the record says which.

must visit a county DMV office and declare the reason for applying for a duplicate

On the test

How far ahead of expiration may an Idaho driver aged 21 or older renew in person?

Up to 25 months. The window is long so a renewal does not have to wait for a trip home or a free afternoon near the deadline. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.30: “you may renew your Idaho Class D or CDL driver's license in person up to 25 months before the expiration date”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
