Mountain driving — Idaho Permit Test

Mountain driving on the Idaho permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

When driving in the mountains, use a lower gear to control your speed while going down long hills.

Riding the brakes down a long grade heats them until they stop working, and there is no warning before that.

Never coast downhill by shifting into neutral or disengaging the clutch.

In neutral the engine cannot hold the car back, so the brakes take all of it.

In the mountains, stay close to the right edge of the road, away from oncoming traffic.

The lanes are narrow and the bends are blind, and whatever comes round one will be near the center.

Sound the horn when approaching any curve on a narrow road where the view is obstructed.

It is the only way to tell whatever is round the bend that you are coming.

In the mountains, pay special attention to speed limit signs and signs warning of curves, steep hills or other hazards, and watch for a solid yellow line in your lane marking a no-passing zone.

Those signs are placed where the road surprises you, and there is often nowhere to recover.

On the test

How should a driver control speed on a long mountain descent?

By using a lower gear. Riding the brakes down a long grade heats them until they stop working, and there is no warning before that. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.107: “Use a lower gear to control speeds while going down long hills”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
