Child restraints — Idaho Permit Test

Child restraints on the Idaho permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Idaho law requires anyone carrying children 6 years of age or younger in a non-commercial motor vehicle to protect them properly in approved child car safety seats.

A grown-up's seat belt crosses a small child at the neck and the stomach, which is why the seat is a different piece of equipment.

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.41

The child restraint law applies to cars manufactured with car safety belts after January 1, 1966.

A seat is anchored by the belt, so the law reaches the cars that have belts to anchor it to.

Proper protection means an approved safety seat meeting federal standards, the child fitted snugly with the seat's own straps, the seat secured to the vehicle, and the seat used on every trip.

A seat that is loose, or unused for a short drive, is a seat that will not be there when it is needed.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends that all children younger than 13 ride in the back seat.

The back seat is further from the crush zone and from the airbag, and both of those matter more to a small body.

All children younger than 13 years should ride in the back seat

A child in a rear-facing car seat should never ride in front of an active passenger air bag.

The air bag opens at the height of an adult's chest, which is where a rear-facing seat puts the back of a baby's head.

Read the child seat manufacturer's instructions and the vehicle owner's manual for the height and weight limits and how to install the seat with the belt or the LATCH system.

Each seat fits each car a little differently, and the two books together are what say how this one fits this car.

Always read child seat manufacturers’ instructions and the vehicle owner’s manual for important information on height and weight limits, and how to properly install the car seat using the seat belt or the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system.

On the test

Up to what age must a child ride in an approved child safety seat in Idaho?

6 years of age or younger. A grown-up's seat belt crosses a small child at the neck and the stomach, which is why the seat is a different piece of equipment. How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
