Restricted permit and interlock — Idaho Permit Test
Restricted permit and interlock on the Idaho permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
If your Idaho license is suspended you may qualify for a restricted permit allowing you to drive to and from work, medical treatments and similar places.
It covers the journeys that cannot be given up, and nothing else.
you may qualify for a restricted permit allowing you to drive to and from work, medical treatments, etc.
If you were suspended by the department you apply for a restricted permit at ITD in Boise; if you were suspended by the court you must apply to the court that convicted you.
Applying to the wrong one wastes the time the permit was needed for.
If you are suspended by the court, you must apply for restricted driving privileges from the court that convicted you
The ignition interlock device is mandatory on all administrative license suspensions, beginning after the suspension ends.
It is not an alternative to the suspension; it starts when the suspension finishes.

An ignition interlock requires the driver to provide a breath sample to start the vehicle, and if the sample shows alcohol at or above a preset level the vehicle will not start.
It takes the decision away from the driver at the moment their judgment is worst.
If the sample indicates an alcohol content at or above a preset level, the vehicle will not start
The cost of installing and maintaining an ignition interlock, and its monthly fees, are paid by the driver.
It is an ongoing bill for as long as the device is required, on top of the fines.

On the test
What may a restricted permit allow a suspended Idaho driver to do?
Drive to and from work and medical treatments. It covers the journeys that cannot be given up, and nothing else. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.127: “you may qualify for a restricted permit allowing you to drive to and from work, medical treatments, etc.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
