Young driver restrictions — Idaho Permit Test

Young driver restrictions on the Idaho permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A licensed driver under 16 may drive in daylight only, unless a licensed driver at least 21 years of age is sitting in the front seat beside them.

Night is where a new driver's inexperience costs most, so the youngest drivers keep to daylight or take an adult with them.

Daylight only travel is allowed unless you have a valid licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age sitting in the front seat beside you

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.16

Daylight, for a driver under 16, is defined as 5:00a to 10:00p local time.

The restriction runs on the clock rather than on the sky, so there is nothing to argue about at a traffic stop.

Daylight is defined as 5:00a to 10:00p local time

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.16

For the first 6 months after a license is issued to a driver under 17, no more than one passenger under 17 may ride in the vehicle unless the passengers are related to the driver by blood, adoption or marriage.

A car full of friends is the loudest distraction a new driver meets, and the first six months is when it does the most damage.

the number of passengers in the vehicle who are under the age of 17 shall be limited to not more than one passenger

A driver's license or ID card held by someone 15 to 17 years of age shows 'Under 18 until month/day/year' and expires five days after the holder's 18th birthday.

The card says the driver's age at a glance, which is how a clerk or an officer reads a restriction without looking anything up.

your driver's license or ID card will expire five days after your 18th birthday

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.17

A license or ID card held by someone under 21 shows 'Under 21 until month/day/year' and expires five days after the holder's 21st birthday.

The under-21 marking is there for anyone selling alcohol, and it stops being true the week the holder turns 21.

your driver’s license or ID card will show “Under 21 until month/day/year,” and your license or ID card will expire five days after your 21st birthday.

On the test

What is the restriction on an Idaho driver who is under 16 years of age?

They may drive in daylight only, without a licensed adult of 21 beside them. Night is where a new driver's inexperience costs most, so the youngest drivers keep to daylight or take an adult with them. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.16: “Daylight only travel is allowed unless you have a valid licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age sitting in the front seat beside you”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
