Driver training — Idaho Permit Test

Driver training on the Idaho permit test — 8 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A Driver Training permit lets anyone from 14 and a half and under 17 years of age attend a public school or private driver training program.

The permit is what gets a student into the car with an instructor. Nothing else at that age will.

Driver Training Permits (DT) allow anyone 14 1/2 and under 17 years of age to attend any public school or private driver training program

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.15

While a student is enrolled in driver training, the Driver Training permit is valid only to drive with a driver training instructor.

It is a classroom permit with wheels. Driving on it with a parent beside you is driving unlicensed.

the DT permit is valid only to operate a vehicle with a driver's training instructor

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.15

A Driver Training permit expires five days after the holder's 18th birthday.

The permit is built for a learner under 18, so it runs out just after that birthday rather than on a fixed date.

The permit expires 5 days after the permit holder's 18th birthday

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.15

For a holder 17 and a half years of age or older, the Driver Training permit expires after 6 months, which is 180 days.

An older student is closer to a full license, so the permit is written to run out before it becomes a substitute for one.

The permit expiration for people 17 1/2 years of age and older is 6 months (180 days)

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.15

An approved Idaho driver training program is 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours observing other student drivers in the car, and 6 hours behind the wheel with an approved instructor.

The hours are fixed. A program that gives fewer is not the approved course, and the county will not accept it.

a required 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of in-car experience observing other student drivers, and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel practice with an approved DT instructor.

Driver training is required for anyone under 17 years of age who is applying for an Idaho driver's license.

Under 17 there is no route to a license that skips the course, however much practice a learner has had.

DT is required for anyone under 17 years of age who is applying for an Idaho driver's license

You must buy a Driver Training Instruction Permit before you attend any driver training class.

The permit comes first. A student who turns up to the first class without one is sent away to buy it.

Approved driver training courses run through public schools in most Idaho school districts, and are open to all Idaho residents aged between 14 and a half and 21, whether or not they are public school students.

The course is not a school subject with an enrollment list. A resident of the right age can take it wherever they study.

The courses are open to all Idaho residents between the ages of 14 ½ and 21, even if they are not public school students

On the test

From what age may a student hold an Idaho Driver Training permit?

14 and a half. The permit is what gets a student into the car with an instructor. Nothing else at that age will. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.15: “Driver Training Permits (DT) allow anyone 14 1/2 and under 17 years of age to attend any public school or private driver training program”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
