One driver one license — Idaho Permit Test

One driver one license on the Idaho permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

When you apply for an Idaho driver's license you must hand over any driver's license or ID card another state, U.S. Territory or the District of Columbia issued you.

One person is meant to have one record. A second card from another state is a second record, and a suspension can hide behind it.

you must surrender any driver's license or identification card (ID card) issued to you from another state

A driver transferring a license from another state must pass the Class D knowledge test, and the skills test as well if that license has been expired for 25 months or more.

A long-lapsed license says nothing about what the holder remembers now, so the road test comes back with it.

you will be required to pass a Class D knowledge test (and skills test if your license has been expired for 25 months or more)

Getting a credential in another jurisdiction cancels your Idaho credential.

Two live licenses would let a driver serve a suspension on one and keep driving on the other.

your Idaho credential will be canceled

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.12

A driver from another country who is issued an Idaho Class D license keeps the foreign license, but may not show or use it to operate a motor vehicle.

Showing the wrong card at a stop is charged as a misdemeanor, and nobody carries two licenses by accident.

you are not allowed to show or use your foreign driver's license for operating a motor vehicle

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.12

On moving to Idaho you must apply for an Idaho driver's license within 30 days of residing here, whether or not your out-of-state license has expired.

The clock starts when you move in, not when your old license runs out. On day 31 an unexpired out-of-state license is not enough.

you will need to apply for an Idaho driver’s license within 30 days of residing in Idaho, whether your out-of-state license has expired or not

On the test

What happens to an out-of-state license when a driver applies for an Idaho one?

It is surrendered to the Idaho office at the time of application. One person is meant to have one record. A second card from another state is a second record, and a suspension can hide behind it. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.12: “you must surrender any driver's license or identification card (ID card) issued to you from another state”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
