Point system — Idaho Permit Test
Point system on the Idaho permit test — 10 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Your driving record is evaluated by a point system in which you receive one to four points for each moving traffic violation.
Not every violation counts the same, and the point value is what separates a rolling stop from a serious one.
you receive one to four points for each moving traffic violation on your record
Accumulating 8 to 11 points in any 12 months brings a warning letter.
The warning is the one step that costs nothing but attention, and it is the last one that does.
8 to 11 in any 12 months Warning letter
Accumulating 12 to 17 points in any 12 months brings a 30-day suspension.
This is the first band where the license actually stops working, and it is only four points past the warning.
12 to 17 in any 12 months 30-day suspension
Accumulating 18 to 23 points in any 24 months brings a 90-day suspension.
The window widens to 24 months at this band, so violations from further back still count toward it.
18 to 23 in any 24 months 90-day suspension
Accumulating 24 or more points in any 36 months brings a 6-month suspension.
The longest window catches the driver who collects points steadily rather than all at once.
24 or more in any 36 months 6-month suspension
Points may be removed from your driving record once every three years by completing an ITD-approved Defensive Driving Course or a Traffic Safety Education Course.
It is once every three years, so using it on a small violation means it is unavailable for a large one.
Points may be removed from your driving record once every three years by completing either an ITD-approved Defensive Driving Course (DDC) or a Traffic Safety Education Course (TSC), offered by law enforcement at the time of a stop and issuance of a citation in some cities in the state.
A maximum of three points may be removed on completing an ITD-approved Defensive Driving Course, and the points must already be on the record before the course is completed.
Taking the course in advance banks nothing; the points have to be there first.
A maximum of three (3) points may be removed from your driving record upon completion of an ITD-approved DDC
A maximum of four points may be removed on completing a Traffic Safety Education Course, which must be offered by law enforcement and accepted at the time of citation.
It removes one more point than the defensive driving course, and it is only available at the roadside.
A maximum of four (4) points may be removed from your driving record upon completion of a TSC
A Traffic Safety Education Course must be completed within 45 days of the citation, and the number of points removed matches the number associated with that citation.
It removes the points from that citation and no others, so there is nothing to gain by delaying.
must be completed within 45 days of the citation
Both courses only remove points from your driving record; they do not remove the conviction.
The conviction is what an insurer and an employer read, and it stays whatever the point total does.

On the test
How many points does a moving traffic violation carry in Idaho?
One to four points. Not every violation counts the same, and the point value is what separates a rolling stop from a serious one. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.123: “you receive one to four points for each moving traffic violation on your record”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
