Knowledge test — Idaho Permit Test

Knowledge test on the Idaho permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

The Idaho Class D knowledge test has 40 questions.

Forty is the size of the paper. It is what the pool has to be bigger than, and what every other number about the test is a fraction of.

The knowledge test consists of 40 questions; you can miss up to six (6) questions before failing the test

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.32

Six is the most questions you may miss on the Idaho knowledge test and still pass.

Missing the sixth still passes. It is the seventh that ends the attempt, which is worth knowing before you start guessing at the end.

Knowledge test questions are taken directly from information in the Driver's Handbook.

Nothing on the paper comes from anywhere else, so the book in front of you is the whole syllabus.

Knowledge test questions are taken directly from information included in the Driver's Handbook

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.32

If you fail a knowledge test you must wait three days to retest, and you pay the knowledge test fee again.

The wait is there to make a second attempt a second attempt rather than a second guess.

IF YOU FAIL A KNOWLEDGE TEST, YOU MUST WAIT THREE (3) DAYS TO RETEST

Web-based practice tests are not an accurate representation of Idaho knowledge tests, except for the sample questions ITD publishes on its own website.

The department says plainly that other people's practice papers do not match its own, so studying them is studying the wrong thing.

Web-based driver practice tests are not an accurate representation of Idaho knowledge tests, with the exception of the sample test questions provided by ITD through the itd.idaho.gov website.

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.32

An applicant must be 15 years of age or older to take the knowledge and skills tests.

Fifteen is the floor for being tested at all, whatever the applicant has already studied.

Applicants must be 15 years of age or older to take the knowledge and skills tests

July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.32

A new applicant, a driver transferring an out-of-state license, and a driver whose Idaho license has been expired 25 months or more all have to take the knowledge test.

The paper is where Idaho law gets checked, and each of those three has never had it checked here.

If you are a new applicant, transferring your out-of-state driver's license, or your Idaho driver's license has been expired for 25 months or more, you must take the knowledge test

On the test

How many questions does the Idaho Class D knowledge test have?

40 questions. Forty is the size of the paper. It is what the pool has to be bigger than, and what every other number about the test is a fraction of. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.32: “The knowledge test consists of 40 questions; you can miss up to six (6) questions before failing the test”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
