Drugs and driving — Idaho Permit Test

Drugs and driving on the Idaho permit test — 8 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Avoid taking any drug that might hamper your ability to operate your vehicle, and drinking alcohol while taking certain drugs may make you feel and be more impaired.

The two together are worse than either alone, and the driver notices neither.

you may feel and be more impaired

When your doctor writes a prescription, ask whether it will make you drowsy or otherwise affect your driving, and if it will, let someone else drive while you are taking it.

The label may not say it plainly, and the doctor is the one who knows.

Over-the-counter drugs such as pain relievers, lozenges and cough and cold remedies must by law provide directions for use, and if driving is discouraged you should not get behind the wheel.

A cold remedy bought without a prescription can be as sedating as one with it.

If driving is discouraged, don't get behind the wheel

Driving while under the influence of legal or illegal substances is drugged driving, and it is illegal in every state.

The substance being legal to own says nothing about whether it is legal to drive on.

Marijuana slows reaction time and impairs judgment of time and distance.

Judging time and distance is the whole job at an intersection, and that is what it takes away.

Methamphetamine or cocaine causes aggressive and reckless behaviors.

Unlike a sedative, these do not make a driver slow; they make them dangerous in a different way.

Opioids cause drowsiness and impaired memory and thinking skills, and sedatives such as benzodiazepines and barbiturates cause dizziness and drowsiness.

These are the drugs most often taken on prescription, and they are on the same list as the illegal ones.

Strategies to prevent impaired driving include offering to be a designated driver, having a designated driver take all the car keys, and getting a ride to and from parties where there are drugs and alcohol.

Every one of them is a decision made before the drinking rather than after it.

Have a designated driver take all car keys

On the test

What does drinking alcohol while taking certain medications do?

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
