Night driving — Idaho Permit Test
Night driving on the Idaho permit test — 10 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
About 90% of driving choices are based on what you see, and at night your vision is reduced, so always drive slowly enough to stop within the distance you can see ahead.
The headlights set the limit, not the speed sign, and outrunning them means arriving at a hazard already too late.
always drive slowly enough so you can stop within the distance you can see ahead
The distance you can see ahead is about 350 feet on high beams and about 100 feet on low beams.
One hundred feet is a little over a second at highway speed, which is why low beams and high speed do not go together.
about 100 feet when using the low beams
Turn on your headlights, not just your parking lights, when driving between sunset and sunrise or when visibility falls below 500 feet.
Parking lights mark a stopped car; they do not light the road and they read wrongly to everyone else.
when visibility has been reduced to below 500 feet
The gray hours of twilight and dawn are the most dangerous times of the day.
Everything is visible but nothing has edges, and drivers have not yet decided it is dark enough for lights.

Avoid looking into the headlights of oncoming vehicles; instead shift your eyes down to the lower right side of your traffic lane.
Looking at the lights leaves an afterimage that hides everything else for several seconds.

Dim your headlights to low beam when approaching or following another vehicle, or on lighted roads.
High beams in a mirror blind the driver in front as completely as they blind an oncoming one.

Never wear sunglasses when light levels are low.
They take away the little light that is left, at exactly the time there is none to spare.

Keep your headlights clean, because dirt will dim their light and may distort the beam.
Dirt builds up slowly enough that the driver never notices the light getting worse.

If you must park on a highway shoulder at night, turn on your emergency flashers or parking lights.
A dark car on a shoulder is invisible until a driver's headlights are already on it.

At night, increase the following distance between your vehicle and the one in front.
Everything is seen later at night, so the extra distance is buying back the reaction time the dark took away.

On the test
How fast should a driver travel at night?
Slowly enough to stop within the distance they can see. The headlights set the limit, not the speed sign, and outrunning them means arriving at a hazard already too late. July 2026 Idaho Driver's Handbook, p.108: “always drive slowly enough so you can stop within the distance you can see ahead”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
