At any other time a driver must stop before meeting or overtaking a school bus that is stopped and loading or unloading passengers, on any two-lane roadway, any highway or private road, and any parking lot on school property. What must you do when passing a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights?
A driver approaching a stationary emergency or maintenance vehicle showing oscillating, rotating or flashing lights must yield, change to a lane away from the workers where possible, reduce speed and proceed with caution. Somebody is standing beside that vehicle with traffic going past their back. Moving over is the whole of what keeps them alive.
When approaching a stationary (non-moving) emergency/maintenance vehicle using visual signals-by displaying blue, red, amber, white, or green oscillating, rotating or flashing lights- or an emergency scene where those lights are in use, Illinois law requires motorists to yield, change to a lane away from the emergency workers when possible, and proceed with caution.

How far from an oncoming vehicle must you dim your high beams?
Bright lights must be dimmed 500 feet before meeting an oncoming vehicle and 300 feet before passing a vehicle. The two distances differ because the mirror throws your light back at a following driver from closer than a windshield does.

Who must wear a seat belt?
Illinois law requires all drivers and passengers aged 8 and older, in the front and back seats, to wear safety belts even in a vehicle with air bags. An air bag is built to work with a belt, not instead of one. The back seat is named because that is where people assume the rule stops.

How far before a turn must you signal?
In a business or residential area a driver must give a continuous turn signal for at least 100 feet before turning. A hundred feet is roughly four car lengths, which is enough for the driver behind to lift off. Signaling as you turn tells them nothing they can use.

May you turn right on a red light?
A driver may turn right at a red light unless a sign prohibits it, and may turn left at a red light from a one-way street onto another one-way street with traffic moving to the left, after a complete stop and after yielding. Both turns are allowed by default in Illinois, which is why the prohibiting sign matters. The stop comes first in either case.
You may turn right at a red light unless there is a sign prohibiting it. You also may turn left at a red light when turning from a one-way street onto another one-way street that has traffic moving to the left. In both instances, come to a complete stop and yield the right of way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before turning.

May you turn left on a red light onto a one-way street?

An Illinois instruction permit is issued to a 15-, 16- or 17-year-old on proof that they are enrolled in, or about to start, an approved driver education course. The permit exists to let driver education happen on a real road. Illinois issues it against the course, not against the birthday alone.
If you are age 15-17, you may receive an instruction permit with acceptable proof from the authorized driver education provider. How long must you hold a learner's permit before a license?

What hours may a provisional driver not drive?
Permit and Initial Licensing Phase drivers may not drive between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, or between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Nighttime driving restrictions - Sun.-Thurs., 10 p.m.-6 a.m.; Fri.-Sat., 11 p.m.-6 a.m. (local curfews may differ).
As of 14 Sep 2026
How many passengers may a new provisional driver carry?
For the first 12 months of licensing, or until turning 18, an Initial Licensing Phase driver may carry only one passenger under age 20 unless the passenger is a sibling, stepsibling, child or stepchild. Carrying friends is the single biggest crash risk for a new driver. Family is carved out because the rule is about the carload, not about the errand.
For the first 12 months of licensing, or until the driver turns 18, whichever occurs first, the number of passengers is limited to one person under age 20, unless the passenger(s) is a sibling, stepsibling, child, or stepchild of the driver.

At what blood alcohol level do drunk-driving penalties increase?
A driver convicted of DUI with a blood-alcohol concentration of .16% or more, or while transporting a child under age 16, may face enhanced penalties. Twice the limit and a child in the car are the two aggravating facts Illinois names. Both turn an ordinary DUI into something worse.

How many points on your license lead to a suspension?

How much distance must you leave when passing a bicycle?
A motorist passing a bicyclist must pass slowly and leave at least 3 feet of space from the edge of the vehicle’s side mirror, and must wait where that space is not available. Ask a question about Illinois road law
Easier than searching the manual: ask in your own words — how far from a fire hydrant you may park, when you must stop for a school bus — and the answer comes from Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 or Illinois’s code, with the page or the section it is in. When neither says, the answer says so rather than guess. Or tick Nationwide and compare every state on one question.
