Illinois Permit Practice Test — Written Test, 35 Questions

Free 10-question Illinois permit practice test, then full 35-question tests like the real exam (28 to pass), each question cited to the Illinois Rules of the Road 2026.

The exam

The Illinois Secretary of State knowledge test is 35 questions, and 28 correct is a pass. Everything on it comes out of Illinois Rules of the Road 2026. Officially it is the knowledge test; most people call it the written test, or the permit test.

Illinois does not state the score that passes its knowledge test directly: 28 of 35 follows from what it does state (92 Ill. Adm. Code 1030.80(b): “a written test consisting of a minimum of 35 questions, of which 80% percent must be answered correctly”).

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

Ask a question about Illinois road law

Easier than searching the manual: ask in your own words — how far from a fire hydrant you may park, when you must stop for a school bus — and the answer comes from Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 or Illinois’s code, with the page or the section it is in. When neither says, the answer says so rather than guess. Or tick Nationwide and compare every state on one question.

What Illinois tests

136 concepts, 652 separate rules. Each one is a page of its own.

Questions from the Illinois test

What does Illinois require of anyone who drives on its roads?

A valid Illinois driver’s license. The license is the state saying it has checked you can drive. Without one, every trip is a ticket waiting to happen. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.4: “To drive legally in Illinois, you must have a valid Illinois driver’s license.”

What is the youngest age at which Illinois issues a driver’s license?

16 years old. Sixteen is the earliest Illinois lets anyone drive alone, and everything before it is practice under somebody else. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.4: “You must be at least age 16 to obtain an Illinois driver’s license.”

How long may a new Illinois resident drive on a valid license from another state?

Up to 90 days, or until that license expires. A new resident drives on the old license while the paperwork catches up. The clock stops at whichever date arrives first, so an expiring license shortens it. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.5: “If you have permanently moved to Illinois from another state or country and have a valid non-Illinois driver’s license. You must obtain an Illinois license within 90 days or before your driver’s license expires, whichever comes first.”

Within how many days of a legal name change must an Illinois driver apply for a corrected license?

30 days. A license that names somebody you no longer are proves nothing at a traffic stop. Thirty days is the window Illinois gives to put it right. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.6: “If you have legally changed your name, you must apply for a corrected driver’s license/ ID card. This must be done within 30 days of the name change.”

What must an Illinois license applicant prove at the counter?

Legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, residency and signature. Every one of those is a thing somebody has tried to fake. Asking for all five is how the state makes one forged paper not enough. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.6: “To receive an Illinois driver’s license/ID card, you must provide acceptable forms of identification to prove your legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, residency, and signature.”

How long is an ordinary Illinois driver’s license valid?

Four years. Tying the date to your birthday makes it one you already remember. Four years is long enough that people forget it otherwise. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.8: “A driver’s license is valid for four years and expires on the driver’s birthday except in the following cases:”

How long can imprisonment run for Illinois driver’s license fraud?

Up to five years. A faked license is a faked identity, which is why the penalty is a prison term rather than a fine. The suspension runs on top of it. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.9: “Persons are subject to arrest, possible imprisonment of up to five years, and a 12-month suspension or revocation of their driving privileges for the following offenses:”

Within how many days of signing must a Medical Report be presented to Illinois DMV staff?

90 days. A doctor’s opinion goes stale. Illinois will not accept a report on a condition that was last looked at half a year ago. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.9: “In certain instances, you must provide a Medical Report completed by a licensed physician verifying your medical ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. The report must be presented to the DMV personnel within 90 days from the date the physician signs it.”

Who keeps the record of an Illinois driver’s violations and crashes?

The Secretary of State’s office. Suspensions are counted off that record, not off memory. It is the reason three tickets in a year add up to something. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.9: “The Secretary of State keeps records of the traffic violations and crashes you accumulate while licensed in Illinois.”

From what age are Illinois license applicants asked to join the Organ/Tissue Donor Registry?

16 years old. The counter is the one moment the state has everybody’s attention, so that is where the question gets asked. Saying no costs nothing. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.10: “Illinois Organ/Tissue Donor Registry - Applicants age 16 and older will be asked to join the registry.”

Which Illinois service can a qualifying driver complete online?

Renewing a valid driver’s license. Not every renewal needs a counter. Knowing which ones can be done online is what saves the trip for the ones that cannot. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.12: “Renewing a valid driver’s license for qualifying drivers;”

How many attempts does an Illinois applicant get at each exam within one year?

Three attempts. Three tries in a year is enough to fix a weak spot and not enough to guess your way through. After that the fee and the clock start again. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.13: “You are allowed three attempts to pass each exam within one year from the date you paid your application fee.”

How long must an applicant caught cheating wait before retaking the Illinois written exam?

30 days. An open book or a phone in view is enough to end the sitting. The month off is what stops somebody simply queuing up again that afternoon. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.13: “Any applicant found cheating will fail the exam and be prohibited from retaking it for 30 days.”

What visual acuity does Illinois require of a driver?

At least 20/40. Twenty-forty is roughly the sharpness it takes to read a sign while there is still time to act on it. Glasses count, which is why the restriction exists. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.13: “Minimum visual acuity of 20/40 with or without corrective lenses.”

How often must an Illinois driver with traffic convictions take the written exam?

Every eight years. A clean record is Illinois taking your driving as its own evidence. Anything on the record and the rules get asked about again. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.14: “Every driver must take a written exam every eight years, except for a driver who has no traffic convictions.”

Which renewing Illinois drivers must take a driving exam?

Drivers aged 87 and older. The road test is the one check that watches you drive rather than asking what you know. Illinois brings it back at 87 for the same reason it starts with it. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.14: “All new drivers must take a driving exam. Drivers ages 87 and older, as well as those turning 87 or older when renewing their license, must also take a driving exam.”

Who may request an oral version of the Illinois written test?

An applicant with a language barrier or a reading or learning disability. A reading difficulty is not a driving difficulty. The oral test asks the same questions out loud so the paper is not the thing being tested. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.15: “Oral examinations (for the written test) can be requested in person at any Secretary of State driver’s license facility, Monday through Thursday. The services are provided for applicants who may have a language barrier or any reading or learning disability.”

What does a 15-year-old need to show to receive an Illinois instruction permit?

Proof of enrollment in an approved driver education course. The permit exists to let driver education happen on a real road. Illinois issues it against the course, not against the birthday alone. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.16: “If you are age 15-17, you may receive an instruction permit with acceptable proof from the authorized driver education provider. The document must state that you are enrolled in an approved driver education course and/or will start attending an approved driver education course within the next 30 days.”

What does an Illinois applicant under 18 bring to the counter besides identification and the permit?

A 50-hour driving log with the proper signature. The log is the only evidence the practice hours happened. Turning up without it means the application stops at the counter. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.16: “To apply for a driver’s license before age 18, you must bring the following documents to the DMV: • Instruction permit; • Acceptable forms of identification (see page 106); • Affidavit/Consent For Minor To Drive (if applicable); • Cooperative Driver Testing Certificate (if applicable); and • 50-hour driving log with proper signature.”

How many hours of behind-the-wheel training does an approved Illinois driver education course include?

6 hours. Rules learned in a classroom only become driving once they are used on a road. Illinois sets a floor under both halves. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.16: “Approved driver education courses include at least 30 hours of classroom study and six hours of behind-the-wheel training in a regular passenger vehicle.”

Whose Adult Driver Education Course does Illinois accept?

One from a provider certified by the Secretary of State. An uncertified course is money spent on nothing, because the counter will not take it. Checking the provider first is the whole of the advice. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.18: “The Adult Driver Education Course can only be taught by providers certified by the Secretary of State’s office. Courses may be taught in a classroom setting or online, depending on the certification of a provider. Completion of an Adult Driver Education Course from a provider not certified by the Secretary of State’s office will not be accepted.”

How many stages does the Illinois Graduated Driver Licensing program have?

Three stages. A new driver earns freedom in steps rather than getting it all on one birthday. Each stage has to be driven clean to reach the next. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.18: “Illinois’ Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program requires drivers ages 15-20 to work their way toward full-driving privileges. There are three progressive stages, usually beginning at age 15, when most young drivers obtain their learner’s permit. Young drivers must earn the right to move from one phase to the next based on their driving behavior. Each phase of the GDL process sets forth specific guidelines for a teen driver.”

What can an Illinois parent who consented to a minor’s license do before the driver turns 18?

Cancel the license at any time, for any reason. The adult who vouched for a minor driver can take the vouching back. Getting the license again means reapplying, retesting and paying again. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.19: “Parental Consent-A driver age 16-17 must have the written consent of a parent/ legal guardian to obtain a driver’s license. The parent/legal guardian who gave initial consent may cancel the minor’s license at any time, for any reason, until the driver turns 18 by contacting the Secretary of State’s office.”

How many court supervisions for serious traffic offenses may an Illinois driver under 21 receive?

One supervision. Court supervision keeps a conviction off the record, and a young driver gets it once. The school is the condition, not a formality. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.19: “Court Supervision for Moving Violations - A driver under age 21 is limited to one court supervision for serious traffic offenses. To obtain court supervision for a traffic violation, a driver must attend traffic safety school.”

Where should an Illinois driver pull over when stopped by law enforcement?

Onto the right-hand shoulder, or the next safest place. Where you stop decides whether the officer walks up beside moving traffic. A narrow shoulder is a reason to go a little further, not to stop where you are. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.21: “Slow down, activate turn signal, and safely pull over onto the right-hand shoulder of the roadway. If there is no shoulder or it is too narrow to pull over, find the next safest location and pull over.”

From what age may an Illinois driver use a hands-free device while driving?

19 years old. A phone in your hand is a hand off the wheel and eyes off the road. Nineteen is the age at which Illinois allows even the hands-free version. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.22: “Illinois law prohibits the use of handheld cellphones, texting, or using other electronic communications while operating a motor vehicle. Hands-free devices or Bluetooth technology is allowed for persons age 19 and older.”

From what age does the Illinois safety belt law apply to a passenger?

8 years old. An air bag is built to work with a belt, not instead of one. The back seat is named because that is where people assume the rule stops. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.23: “Illinois law requires all drivers and passengers (front and back seats) age 8 and older to wear safety belts, even if the vehicle is equipped with air bags.”

Under what age does the Illinois Child Passenger Protection Act require a child restraint?

Under 8 years old. A seat belt is built around an adult body, and a small child slides under it. The restraint is what puts the load where a child can take it. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.23: “The Child Passenger Protection Act requires all children under age 8 to be properly secured in an appropriate child safety restraint system.”

What is the Illinois speed limit on interstates and tollways where no sign says otherwise?

70 mph. Seventy is the ceiling and not a target, because the limit assumes good weather and light traffic. Local governments may post something lower. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.24: “Interstates and tollways - 70 mph.”

What must an Illinois driver do when entering a highway construction zone?

Slow down, stop phone use, yield and move a lane away. A work zone puts people on foot a lane away from traffic. Every part of the rule is about making that lane emptier and slower. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.25: “When approaching or entering a highway construction or maintenance area (also known as work zones), Illinois law requires motorists to slow down, discontinue wireless/cellphone use (unless using a hands-free device that may include the use of a single-sided headset), yield to any authorized vehicles or workers in the area, change to a lane away from the workers when possible, and proceed with caution.”

What must an Illinois driver do when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights?

Yield, move a lane away where possible and reduce speed. Somebody is standing beside that vehicle with traffic going past their back. Moving over is the whole of what keeps them alive. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.25: “When approaching a stationary (non-moving) emergency/maintenance vehicle using visual signals-by displaying blue, red, amber, white, or green oscillating, rotating or flashing lights- or an emergency scene where those lights are in use, Illinois law requires motorists to yield, change to a lane away from the emergency workers when possible, and proceed with caution.”

What must an Illinois driver do for people in a school zone crosswalk?

Stop and yield the right of way. A school crosswalk fills and empties in bursts, and the adult in it is often a crossing guard. Illinois asks for a stop rather than a slow pass. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.26: “stop and yield the right of way to any children or adults in the crosswalk area.”

What must an Illinois driver do when meeting a funeral procession?

Yield the right of way to all its vehicles. A procession only works if it stays together, and drivers who cut into it split the line. Yielding to all of it is what keeps it one group. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.26: “Motorists encountering a funeral procession must yield the right of way to all vehicles in the procession.”

What must an Illinois driver do before turning right on a red light?

Come to a complete stop and yield. The right turn on red is permission to go, not priority over anybody. The stop comes first and the yielding comes after it. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.26: “When making a right turn on a red light after a complete stop.”

What must an Illinois driver do for a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk?

Come to a complete stop and yield. A pedestrian in a crosswalk has no metal around them and no way to get out of the way. Illinois asks for a stop rather than a slow pass. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.27: “A driver must come to a complete stop (and yield): • When a pedestrian is in a marked crosswalk.”

What must an Illinois driver have before passing on a two-lane highway?

A clear view of the left lane with no oncoming traffic. A pass on a two-lane road is a deliberate drive into the oncoming lane. The only thing that makes it safe is being able to see that nothing is there. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.28: “On a two-lane highway, the left lane should be clearly visible and free of oncoming traffic for a distance great enough to permit passing.”

What marks an Illinois no passing zone on a two-lane, two-way road?

A solid yellow line or a no passing sign. The line and the sign both mean somebody measured the sight distance and found it short. They mark the places a driver cannot judge for themselves. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.29: “In an area marked for no passing by a solid yellow line or with a DO NOT PASS or NO PASSING ZONE sign.”

Which half of an Illinois roadway must a driver normally use?

The right half. Everything else about a two-way road follows from this. The exceptions are all places where the left is the only way through. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.29: “You must drive on the right half of the roadway except:”

How far before turning must an Illinois driver signal in a business or residential area?

At least 100 feet. A hundred feet is roughly four car lengths, which is enough for the driver behind to lift off. Signaling as you turn tells them nothing they can use. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.30: “In a business or residential area, you must give a continuous turn signal for at least 100 feet before turning.”

Into which lane does an Illinois driver complete a right turn?

The right-hand lane of the road being entered. Swinging wide on a right turn takes you into the lane beside you. Hugging the curb also leaves no gap for a cyclist to be caught in. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.31: “Follow the general curve of the curb while making the right turn. Stay as close as possible to the curb. • Turn into the right-hand lane of the roadway you are entering.”

How far must an Illinois driver be able to see before turning around on a hill?

At least 500 feet. A U-turn takes the whole road for several seconds. On a blind hill the car that arrives has no time to do anything about it. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.32: “You must not turn around on curves and hills unless you can see for at least 500 feet in all directions.”

In which direction does traffic move around an Illinois roundabout?

Counter-clockwise. Knowing which way the traffic runs tells you which way to look. Counter-clockwise means everything reaching you comes from the left. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.32: “A rotary or roundabout is an intersection where traffic travels around a central island in a circular, counter-clockwise direction.”

When does Illinois not require a stop for a school bus in the opposite direction?

When both vehicles are on a four-lane roadway. Four lanes put two lanes of traffic between the bus and the children crossing to it. It is the one case where Illinois does not ask for a stop. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.32: “A vehicle is not required to stop for a school bus when both vehicles are on a four-lane roadway and the bus is stopped in the opposite direction from which a driver is traveling.”

Who has the right of way at an Illinois railroad crossing?

The train or railroad equipment. A train needs more than a mile to stop and cannot steer. Every other rule about crossings follows from that one fact. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.33: “You must yield the right of way to any approaching train or railroad equipment.”

Where must an Illinois driver stop when leaving an urban driveway?

Before entering the sidewalk area. The sidewalk is where somebody walks past the end of your driveway. Stopping before it is stopping before the part you cannot see. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.34: “In urban areas, you must come to a complete stop when moving out of an alley, building, private road, or driveway and before entering the sidewalk area.”

Which way do the front wheels point when an Illinois vehicle is parked facing downhill at a curb?

Toward the curb. If the brake lets go, the wheels steer the car into the curb instead of down the hill. Turning them is a parking brake you can see. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.34: “If you park on a street with curbing and your vehicle is facing downhill, turn the front wheels toward the curb so your vehicle will roll toward the curb.”

Within what distance of the curb must an Illinois vehicle be parked on a two-way street?

12 inches. Beyond a foot the car sticks into the lane traffic uses. Twelve inches is the line between parked and in the way. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.35: “When parking on streets with two-way traffic, park so the right-hand wheels are parallel to and within 12 inches of the curb.”

Who may use an Illinois parking space reserved for persons with disabilities?

A vehicle displaying disability plates or a placard. Those spaces are wider and closer for a reason, and there are only a few. One car parked in them without a placard takes them all. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.35: “Vehicles displaying license plates or parking placards for persons with disabilities may use spaces reserved for persons with disabilities.”

Who may park in an Illinois space with an electric vehicle charging station?

Electric vehicles and nothing else. A charging bay with a gasoline car in it is a charger nobody can reach. The rule keeps the space doing its job. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.35: “Only electric vehicles are allowed to park in these designated spaces.”

What does Illinois call stopping on the roadway side of a parked vehicle?

Double parking. A double-parked car makes the lane beside it disappear. Everybody behind has to pull into oncoming traffic to get round it. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.35: “On the roadway side of any parked vehicle (also known as double parking).”

When may an Illinois driver drive on a sidewalk?

Where it is part of a driveway. A sidewalk is the one part of the street built for people rather than cars. Crossing it to a driveway is the only reason to be on it. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.36: “Drive on a sidewalk except when it is part of a driveway.”

Who counts as a pedestrian under Illinois law?

A person on foot, in-line skates or a skateboard. The word decides who the yielding rules protect. A skateboarder is not traffic, which is why they are named here. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.40: “A pedestrian is any person afoot or wearing in-line speed skates or riding a skateboard, including a person with a physical, hearing, or visual disability.”

Who has the right of way when an Illinois pedestrian is using a white cane?

The pedestrian with the disability. Somebody who cannot see or hear the car has no way to get out of its path. The whole of the avoiding is the driver’s job. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.40: “When approaching a pedestrian with a disability who is using a guide dog, a white cane, a wheelchair, or another assistive device on a sidewalk or roadway, the person with a disability has the right of way and is granted the same rights as any pedestrian.”

What do Illinois signs for special hazard areas mark?

School zones, bus stops, playgrounds and parks. Those signs mark the places children gather rather than the places they cross. Seeing one is a reason to expect somebody to run out. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.41: “Watch for signs that mark special hazard areas, such as school zones, bus stops, playgrounds, parks, and schools.”

What rights does an Illinois motorcycle rider have on the road?

The same as other roadway users. A motorcycle is traffic, not an obstacle to be squeezed past. Treating it as a vehicle is the whole of the rule. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.41: “Motorcycle riders have the same rights and responsibilities as other roadway users.”

What makes a vehicle an autocycle in Illinois?

Three wheels, a steering wheel and seats not straddled. Three wheels and a steering wheel put it closer to a car than a motorcycle, and Illinois licenses it that way. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.42: “An autocycle is a three-wheeled vehicle that has a steering wheel and seating that does not require the driver to straddle or sit astride it.”

What rights does an Illinois bicyclist have on most roadways?

The same as other roadway users. A bicycle on the road is traffic with the same claim to the lane. Drivers who treat it as an obstacle are the reason this is written down. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.42: “On most roadways, bicyclists (including those on electric bikes or gas driven bicycles that do not exceed 20 mph) have the same rights and responsibilities as other roadway users, including the right of way.”

Which rules does an Illinois moped rider follow?

Signs, signals and most bicycle laws. A moped is slower than traffic and smaller than a car, so both sets of rules apply. Nothing about it exempts the rider from signals. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.44: “A scooter or moped driver must obey all signs, signals and traffic laws and is subject to most laws regarding the use of bicycles.”

Where should an Illinois driver avoid sitting behind a large vehicle?

In its blind spots. A truck driver who cannot see you in the mirrors does not know you are there. Sitting in that space is the whole of the risk. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.45: “Stay out of blind spots and maintain a visible position when following a large vehicle. Drivers of large vehicles should be able to see surrounding vehicles in their side mirrors.”

What must an Illinois driver do approaching a disabled vehicle on a four-lane highway?

Change lanes away from it where safe. The person standing by that car is a foot from the traffic lane. Moving over is the same rule that protects police and tow crews. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.45: “When drivers approach any disabled vehicle using hazard lights on a four-lane highway, Illinois law requires drivers to change lanes away from the disabled vehicle if it is safe to do so. If it is not safe to change lanes, the driver should reduce speed when approaching and passing the disabled vehicle.”

What is the maximum speed of an Illinois low-speed vehicle?

25 mph. It looks like a golf cart and is treated as a car, which is why it carries a title and plates. The speed is what limits where it may go. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.46: “speed of 25 mph. Low-speed vehicles must be titled and registered in the same manner as any other vehicle.”

What must certain Illinois slow-moving vehicles display at the rear?

An orange slow-moving vehicle emblem. The emblem is the only warning you get that the thing ahead is doing 10 mph. Closing speed is what kills on rural roads. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.46: “An orange slow-moving vehicle emblem must be on the rear of certain slow-moving vehicles.”

What do Illinois snowmobile warning signs tell a driver?

To use care where snowmobiles share the area. A snowmobile crossing a road appears from a field with no road noise ahead of it. The warning sign marks the places it happens. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.47: “During the winter, a driver may share the roadway with snowmobiles. Use care when driving in areas with snowmobile warning signs.”

Where may an Illinois horseback rider not ride?

On controlled-access highways and most expressways. A horse on the road is traffic, and it belongs on the right like everything else. Freeways are closed to it because the speeds do not mix. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.47: “Horseback riders may use public roadways. The exceptions are controlled-access highways and most expressways. Horseback riders must ride in the same direction as other traffic and as far to the right as possible.”

At what blood-alcohol concentration is it illegal to drive in Illinois?

.08% or more. That is the line where the state stops arguing about whether you were impaired. Below it a driver can still be convicted on how they drove. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.48: “It is illegal to drive if your BAC is .08% or more.”

From what age does Illinois allow the use of cannabis?

21 years and older. Legal to use is not legal to drive on, which is the confusion this whole section exists to clear up. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.48: “Illinois law allows for the medical and recreational use of cannabis for persons ages 21 and older.”

Which of these does Illinois name as impairing safe driving?

Antihistamines and cold remedies. A pharmacy medicine is still a drug that slows reaction time. The label warning about machinery is the one that means driving. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.49: “In addition to alcohol and cannabis, many prescription and nonprescription drugs impair safe driving. These drugs include but are not limited to: antihistamines, cold remedies, pain relievers, mood-changing drugs, hashish, LSD, heroin, cocaine, morphine, amphetamines, and methamphetamines.”

How long does an Illinois DUI conviction stay on a driving record?

Permanently. Permanently means for the rest of your life, not for a number of years. That is what separates DUI from every other traffic offense here. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.49: “Driving under the influence (DUI) is a serious offense that is classified in Illinois as a violent crime. If you are convicted of DUI, the offense will permanently remain on your driving record.”

How long is the Illinois suspension for failing a chemical test?

Six months. This suspension happens before any court date, on the test result alone. It is separate from whatever the conviction brings later. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.49: “If a chemical test discloses a BAC of .08% or more or a THC level of either 5 nanograms or more per milliliter of whole blood or 10 nanograms or more per milliliter of other bodily substance, your driving privileges will be suspended for six months.”

What is the minimum revocation for a first Illinois DUI conviction?

One year. Revocation has no fixed end, so the year is only the point at which you may apply again. Getting the license back is a separate process. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.50: “A first conviction results in a minimum one-year revocation.”

What does an Illinois Monitoring Device Driving Permit require on the vehicle?

A Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device. The permit is how a first offender keeps driving to work. The device is the condition, and it tests the driver before the engine starts. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.50: “Any eligible Illinois driver who is a first-time DUI offender may apply for a Monitoring Device Driving Permit (MDDP). An MDDP requires a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device (BAIID) to be installed on their vehicle(s) at an approved installation site as a condition of driving relief during a statutory summary suspension period.”

In cases where a death or personal injury has occurred, the Secretary of State’s office is required to revoke the individual’s driver’s license.”

An indefinite withdrawal of driving privileges. Indefinite means there is no date it ends on. You may apply again after a year, and applying is not the same as getting it back. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.58: “A revocation is the indefinite withdrawal of driving privileges by the Secretary of State’s office.”

What is a suspension of Illinois driving privileges?

A temporary loss of driving privileges. This is the difference from a revocation: a suspension has an end date built into it. The fee is what turns the date into a license. When the suspension is for a specific length of time, you may regain your driving privileges after the suspension has ended and you have paid a reinstatement fee.”

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.60: “Cancellation is the termination of driving privileges by formal action of the Secretary of State’s office. Cancellation of a person’s driver’s license or permit will occur because of an error or defect in the license or because the licensee is no longer entitled to the license.”

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.63: “This eight-sided red sign means STOP. You must make a complete stop at the stop line. If there is no stop line, stop before entering the crosswalk. If there is no crosswalk, stop before entering the intersection.”

What kind of instruction does a sign in this color carry?

An order that must be obeyed. The color is the first thing you see from a distance, before the shape resolves. This one always means an order rather than advice. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.64: “RED signs are regulatory signs and must be obeyed. They include STOP, YIELD, DO NOT ENTER, or WRONG WAY.”

What does this sign tell a driver?

They are not allowed to enter. It is the last warning before you are driving into oncoming traffic on a ramp. Seeing it means stop and turn around. You may see this sign if attempting to enter an expressway ramp in the wrong direction.”

What does an Illinois All-Way Stop sign mean?

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.65: “All-Way Stop This sign means there are STOP signs at each approach to an intersection. Traffic from all directions must stop. The first driver to stop is the first driver to go. Other drivers must wait for their turn.”

Crosswalks are not always located at intersections, so you must watch both sides of the street for pedestrians.”

You may find several of these signs on the outside of a sharp curve or on approaches to a narrow bridge.”

What do Illinois construction and maintenance zone signs do?

Alert drivers to changing conditions and protect workers. A work zone changes from week to week, so the signs describe today rather than the map. The people are the reason they exist. They also are used to warn motorists of an existing hazard.”

Real-time information about road conditions. They say what is happening now rather than what is always true. That is why they are worth reading even on a road you know. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.73: “Portable Changeable Message Signs Portable changeable message signs provide real-time information to help communicate with users about road conditions and to provide guidance. Messages in these devices may include slow or stopped traffic warnings, notice of lane or road closures, travel and delay time information, changes in alignment of the road, or changes in road user patterns.”

What must an Illinois driver do behind a vehicle displaying a slow-moving vehicle sign?

Slow down and pass only when safe and legal. The emblem is on a machine doing a fraction of your speed. Closing on it takes far less time than a driver expects. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.74: “Slow-Moving Vehicle A vehicle displaying this sign is moving slowly. You must slow down and may pass only when safe and legal to do so.”

What do Illinois guide signs tell a driver?

Where they are and how to reach a place. Guide signs never ask for anything, which is why they can be read at leisure. County road signs and route markers are the exceptions to the shape. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.74: “Guide Signs Guide signs tell you where you are, what road you are on, and how to get to a specific location. Placards use symbols, colors and text to communicate the hazard and are placed on the outside of transport vehicles, containers, or packages.”

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.81: “Railroad Crossbuck Sign - If a railroad crossing has more than one track, the number of tracks is on the sign below the crossbuck. This is considered a yield sign, and you must yield the right of way to any oncoming trains and railroad equipment.”

Who may direct an Illinois driver to disobey a traffic signal?

A police or traffic control officer. A person directing traffic outranks the lights, and nothing else does. Driving through a parking lot to skip a red light is its own offense. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.77: “Traffic signals and pavement markings must be obeyed unless a police or traffic control officer directs otherwise. A driver may never leave the roadway to avoid a traffic signal.”

What may an Illinois driver do at a steady red arrow?

Turn right after a complete stop and yielding. The exceptions are the same two turns allowed on a red light, and both still need a complete stop first. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.78: “Red Arrow (constantly lit) - The constantly lit red arrow means you cannot make the movement shown by the arrow until a green arrow appears. There are two exceptions. You may make a right turn at a red arrow. You also may make a left turn at a red arrow when turning from a one-way street onto another one-way street that has traffic moving to the left. In both instances, come to a complete stop and yield the right of way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before proceeding.”

They are used most often to change the flow of traffic during certain hours of the day.”

Solid white lines are used on the right of the roadway edge. Solid yellow lines are used on the left edge of divided streets or roadways.”

The sign may be placed up to 750 feet before the railroad crossing.”

What happens to an Illinois vehicle’s stopping distance when its speed doubles?

It becomes four times as long. Stopping distance grows with the square of speed, not with speed. That is why a small increase costs so much more than it feels like. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.84: “Doubling your speed quadruples your vehicle’s stopping distance.”

What does Illinois say about drowsy driving short of falling asleep?

It can still impair the ability to drive safely. Falling asleep is the extreme case, not the risk. Reaction time goes long before the eyes close. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.84: “Drowsy driving can impair your ability to drive safely, even if you do not fall asleep. A driver often cannot react in time to apply brakes or steer away from a potential crash.”

Do not fight the fire yourself.”
