Low speed vehicles — Illinois Permit Test

Low speed vehicles on the Illinois permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A low-speed vehicle has a maximum speed of 25 mph and must be titled and registered in the same way as any other vehicle.

It looks like a golf cart and is treated as a car, which is why it carries a title and plates. The speed is what limits where it may go.

speed of 25 mph. Low-speed vehicles must be titled and registered in the same manner as any other vehicle.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.46

A low-speed vehicle may be used on any street posted at 30 mph or less unless the local municipality prohibits it, and must be titled and registered like any other vehicle.

At 25 mph it cannot keep up with faster traffic, so Illinois keeps it on the slow streets. The town can still say no.

Low-speed vehicles may operate on any street with a posted speed limit of 30 mph or less unless prohibited by the local municipality.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.46

A low-speed vehicle must have a headlight visible for 500 feet from the front and taillights showing a red light visible for 100 feet from the rear.

Even a slow vehicle has to be seen in time to be avoided. The two distances are what make it visible from either end.

Headlight - visible for 500 feet from the front.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.46

A low-speed vehicle must be equipped with a parking brake, a steering wheel, a windshield, safety belts, a rearview mirror, an exterior mirror on the driver side, red reflectors, brake lights and turn signals.

The list is what makes it a vehicle rather than a cart. Missing any of it and the car is not road legal.

Low-speed vehicles must be equipped with the following: • Parking brake. • Steering wheel. • Tires. • Windshield. • Safety belts. • Rearview mirror. • Exterior rearview mirror - mounted on driver’s side of the vehicle. • Red reflectors - mounted on each rear side of the vehicle and one in the middle. • Headlight - visible for 500 feet from the front. • Taillights - red light visible for 100 feet from the rear. • Brake lights. • Front and rear turn signals.

On the test

What is the maximum speed of an Illinois low-speed vehicle?

25 mph. It looks like a golf cart and is treated as a car, which is why it carries a title and plates. The speed is what limits where it may go. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.46: “speed of 25 mph. Low-speed vehicles must be titled and registered in the same manner as any other vehicle.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
