Driver education and testing program — Illinois Permit Test
Driver education and testing program on the Illinois permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
An approved Illinois driver education course includes at least 30 hours of classroom study and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training in a regular passenger vehicle.
Rules learned in a classroom only become driving once they are used on a road. Illinois sets a floor under both halves.
Approved driver education courses include at least 30 hours of classroom study and six hours of behind-the-wheel training in a regular passenger vehicle.
A high school student who finishes an accredited driver education course with a combined grade of A or B may be exempt from the Secretary of State driving exam.
A student who has been graded over a term has been watched for longer than any road test lasts. The grade is what earns the exemption.
High school students who successfully complete an accredited driver education course of classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction with a combined grade of A or B may be exempt from taking a Secretary of State-administered driving exam when applying for a driver’s license.
A Cooperative Driver Testing Certificate must be signed by the driver education instructor and the student’s parent or legal guardian, and it expires on the same day as the instruction permit.
The certificate stands in for a state road test, so both the instructor and a parent have to put their name to it. It dies with the permit and is not extended.
the prospective driver may be issued a Cooperative Driver Testing Certificate, which must be signed by the driver education instructor and the student’s parent/legal guardian. The certificate expires on the same day as the student’s instruction permit and will not be extended.
On the test
How many hours of behind-the-wheel training does an approved Illinois driver education course include?
6 hours. Rules learned in a classroom only become driving once they are used on a road. Illinois sets a floor under both halves. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.16: “Approved driver education courses include at least 30 hours of classroom study and six hours of behind-the-wheel training in a regular passenger vehicle.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
