Regulatory signs — Illinois Permit Test
Regulatory signs on the Illinois permit test — 9 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
This sign is posted on one-way streets and other roadways a driver is not allowed to enter, including an expressway ramp being entered the wrong way.
It is the last warning before you are driving into oncoming traffic on a ramp. Seeing it means stop and turn around.
Do Not Enter This sign is posted on one-way streets and other roadways where you are not allowed to enter. You may see this sign if attempting to enter an expressway ramp in the wrong direction.
Signs like this show the maximum and minimum speed limits for vehicles on freeways and controlled-access highways, and driving below a posted minimum is illegal unless safety requires it.
Most drivers only read the upper figure. The lower one is a rule too, and it is what makes crawling in the traffic stream an offense.
Speed Limit Some signs show maximum and minimum speed limits for all types of vehicles on freeways and controlled-access highways. Driving slower than the minimum speed limit is illegal unless necessary for safety.
A sign with a red circle and a red slash from the upper left to the lower right means the action shown inside the circle is not allowed.
It is a whole family of signs rather than one. Once you can read the circle and the slash, the picture inside tells you the rest.
No (Not Allowed) Signs with a red circle and a red slash from the upper left to the lower right mean a particular action is not allowed. The picture within the circle shows what is not allowed.
This sign is posted on divided highways and expressways, often where an opening in the divider is reserved for authorized vehicles such as police cars, ambulances and snow plows.
The gap in the median looks like a place to turn and is not. It exists so emergency vehicles can turn where nobody else may.
No U-Turn These signs are posted on divided highways or expressways. You may see one where there is an opening in the divided highway that leads to the other side. These openings are only for authorized vehicles, such as police cars, ambulances, snow plows, construction/ maintenance equipment, and other emergency vehicles. Other types of vehicles may not use this opening.
This sign means a turn is not allowed in the direction shown.
The prohibition is read from the picture, which is why the same sign can forbid a left or a right turn.
No Right/Left Turn These signs indicate that turns are not allowed in the direction shown by the arrow.
This sign is used on one-way streets and driveways, and a driver must always go only in the direction it shows.
A street that looks ordinary can be one-way, and this is the only thing that says so. Going the other way meets traffic head-on.
One-Way These signs are used on one-way streets or driveways. You must always go only in the direction of the arrow.
This sign means a right turn on a red light, or a left turn on red at intersecting one-way streets, is prohibited here.
Turning on red is normally allowed in Illinois, so this sign is the exception. It may show a red circle instead of the word.
No Turn on Red This sign is used at some intersections. It tells you that a right turn on a red light or a left turn on a red light at intersecting one-way streets is prohibited. It may also show a red circle instead of the word red.
This sign tells a driver which way to go around a traffic island, median or other obstruction in the middle of the roadway.
An obstruction in the road can be passed on either side unless something says otherwise. This sign is what says otherwise.
Keep Right This sign tells you where to drive when approaching traffic islands, medians, or other obstructions in the middle of the roadway. You must drive to the side indicated by the arrow.
This sign tells a driver they may not pass other vehicles, and it is posted on some two-lane roads carrying traffic in both directions.
It is posted where the yellow lines already say the same thing. Two warnings because the consequence of missing them is a head-on crash.
Do Not Pass This sign informs you that you may not pass other vehicles. It is posted on some two-lane roads where traffic goes in both directions. There will also be yellow “no passing” lines on the road.
On the test
What does this sign tell a driver?
They are not allowed to enter. It is the last warning before you are driving into oncoming traffic on a ramp. Seeing it means stop and turn around. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.65: “Do Not Enter This sign is posted on one-way streets and other roadways where you are not allowed to enter. You may see this sign if attempting to enter an expressway ramp in the wrong direction.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
