Parental responsibility — Illinois Permit Test
Parental responsibility on the Illinois permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A driver aged 16 or 17 needs the written consent of a parent or legal guardian to obtain an Illinois driver’s license, and that adult may cancel the license at any time before the driver turns 18.
The adult who vouched for a minor driver can take the vouching back. Getting the license again means reapplying, retesting and paying again.
Parental Consent-A driver age 16-17 must have the written consent of a parent/ legal guardian to obtain a driver’s license. The parent/legal guardian who gave initial consent may cancel the minor’s license at any time, for any reason, until the driver turns 18 by contacting the Secretary of State’s office.
The parent or legal guardian of a driver under 18 who holds a permit or graduated license may read their minor’s driving record free of charge using a PIN from the Secretary of State.
A parent who can see the record finds out about a ticket from the state rather than from the teenager. That is the point of handing out the PIN.
Parental Access to Teen’s Driving Record - The parent/legal guardian of a person under age 18 who holds an instruction permit or graduated driver’s license may access their minor’s driving record at no cost by visiting ilsos.gov and using a personal identification number (PIN) provided by the Secretary of State’s office.
A Parent-Teen Driving Contract is available from the Secretary of State to set boundaries between parents and a young driver, and it is voluntary.
Most of the rules a teenager actually drives under are the ones at home. Writing them down is what stops them being argued about at midnight.
Parent-Teen Driving Contract - The Secretary of State’s office provides a voluntary Parent-Teen Driving Contract that establishes parameters and boundaries between parents and teenagers to enable a young driver to acquire safe driving habits and skills.
On the test
What can an Illinois parent who consented to a minor’s license do before the driver turns 18?
Cancel the license at any time, for any reason. The adult who vouched for a minor driver can take the vouching back. Getting the license again means reapplying, retesting and paying again. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.19: “Parental Consent-A driver age 16-17 must have the written consent of a parent/ legal guardian to obtain a driver’s license. The parent/legal guardian who gave initial consent may cancel the minor’s license at any time, for any reason, until the driver turns 18 by contacting the Secretary of State’s office.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
