Drivers under 21 and alcohol — Illinois Permit Test

Drivers under 21 and alcohol on the Illinois permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A driver under 21 convicted of DUI faces revocation of driving privileges for at least two years on a first conviction.

For an adult the first DUI revocation is one year. Under 21 it is doubled.

If you are under age 21 and convicted of DUI, you face the revocation of your driving privileges for a minimum of two years for a first conviction.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.52

A driver under 21 found with any trace of alcohol in their system while driving has their privileges suspended for at least three months.

For a driver under 21 there is no allowance at all, which is what zero tolerance means. Any trace is the whole of the test.

If you are under age 21 and found to have any trace of alcohol in your system while operating a motor vehicle, you will have your driving privileges suspended for a minimum of three months.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.52

Everybody under 21 convicted of, or given court supervision for, illegally consuming, buying, possessing or receiving alcohol loses their driving privileges whether or not they were driving at the time.

The license goes even where no car was involved. Illinois ties the drinking offense to driving directly.

All individuals under age 21 who are convicted of or receive court supervision for illegal consumption, purchase, possession, or receiving alcohol as a gift will lose their driving privileges regardless of whether or not they are operating a motor vehicle at the time of the offense.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.52

A driver whose license was suspended before age 21 must complete a driver remedial education course and may have to sit a complete driver’s license examination again.

Getting the license back means proving you have learned something, not just waiting. The full exam can come with it.

If your driver’s license was suspended before age 21, you will be required to successfully complete a driver remedial education course. In addition, you may be required to submit to a complete driver’s license examination to be re-issued a driver’s license.

On the test

What is the minimum revocation for a first DUI conviction by an Illinois driver under 21?

Two years. For an adult the first DUI revocation is one year. Under 21 it is doubled. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.52: “If you are under age 21 and convicted of DUI, you face the revocation of your driving privileges for a minimum of two years for a first conviction.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
