Temporary registration permit — Illinois Permit Test
Temporary registration permit on the Illinois permit test — 2 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A Temporary Registration Permit must be displayed in the same place and the same way as a rear license plate, and it is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued.
Ninety days is long enough for plates to arrive by mail. Displaying it where the plate goes is what makes it readable from behind.
This permit must be displayed in the same place and manner as a rear license plate. The TRP is valid for 90 days from the issuance date, although it may be reissued if the license plates do not arrive within 90 days.
Once the license plates arrive the Temporary Registration Permit should be removed, replaced with the plates, and destroyed and discarded for the owner’s protection.
A discarded permit still carries a valid registration number. Destroying it is what stops somebody else displaying it.
Once you receive the license plates, the TRP should be removed and replaced with the permanent license plates. For your protection, the permit should be destroyed and discarded upon removal.
On the test
How long is an Illinois Temporary Registration Permit valid?
90 days. Ninety days is long enough for plates to arrive by mail. Displaying it where the plate goes is what makes it readable from behind. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.96: “This permit must be displayed in the same place and manner as a rear license plate. The TRP is valid for 90 days from the issuance date, although it may be reissued if the license plates do not arrive within 90 days.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
