Driving exam — Illinois Permit Test

Driving exam on the Illinois permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Every new Illinois driver takes a driving exam, and so does any driver aged 87 or older renewing a license.

The road test is the one check that watches you drive rather than asking what you know. Illinois brings it back at 87 for the same reason it starts with it.

All new drivers must take a driving exam. Drivers ages 87 and older, as well as those turning 87 or older when renewing their license, must also take a driving exam.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.14

A vehicle used for the driving exam must be properly insured, and proof of insurance has to be produced at the time of the exam.

The examiner is a passenger in your car on a public road. The insurance is what covers them, and no proof means no exam.

Be properly insured. Proof of insurance must be provided at the time of the exam.

Only the examiner may be in the vehicle during the driving exam, and children or pets may not be left unattended at the facility.

A back seat full of distraction is not a test of driving. Bring somebody to look after them, or the exam does not start.

Only the examiner is allowed to be with you during the driving exam. Children or pets are not allowed in the vehicle during the exam and cannot be left unattended in the facility while the driving exam is underway.

The driver and the examiner must both wear safety belts during the driving exam, as the law requires.

The belt law does not pause for a test, and the examiner is a passenger like any other. Starting without it is starting with a violation.

During the driving exam, you and the examiner must wear safety belts, as required by law.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.14

A driver automatically fails the driving exam by committing any traffic violation or any dangerous action during it.

The exam is not marked on points when the mistake is one that could hurt somebody. One dangerous act ends it there.

You will automatically fail the exam if you commit any traffic violations or any dangerous actions while taking the exam.

One of the scored maneuvers is backing the vehicle about 50 feet slowly and smoothly, with the driver’s head turned to the right watching the rear.

Mirrors miss a child behind a car. Turning to look is the habit the examiner is watching for, and the distance is long enough to show whether you have it.

Backing the vehicle approximately 50 feet at a slow speed, straight and smoothly. When performing this maneuver, turn your head to the right and watch to the rear.

On the test

Which renewing Illinois drivers must take a driving exam?

Drivers aged 87 and older. The road test is the one check that watches you drive rather than asking what you know. Illinois brings it back at 87 for the same reason it starts with it. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.14: “All new drivers must take a driving exam. Drivers ages 87 and older, as well as those turning 87 or older when renewing their license, must also take a driving exam.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
