Cannabis and driving — Illinois Permit Test

Cannabis and driving on the Illinois permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Illinois law allows medical and recreational use of cannabis for people aged 21 and older.

Legal to use is not legal to drive on, which is the confusion this whole section exists to clear up.

Illinois law allows for the medical and recreational use of cannabis for persons ages 21 and older.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.48

Cannabis may only be carried in a vehicle in a sealed, odor-proof, child-resistant container, and no driver or passenger may use it in a motor vehicle.

All three properties have to hold at once, and an opened bag fails every one. Using it in the car is a separate offense from carrying it.

Cannabis may only be transported in a vehicle in a sealed, odor-proof, and child-resistant container.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.48

A driver who refuses field sobriety testing or roadside chemical testing after an officer reasonably suspects cannabis impairment, or fails it, has their license suspended.

Refusing does not make the stop go away, it makes the suspension automatic. The officer only needs reasonable suspicion to ask.

Refusal to submit to testing or failure of field sobriety tests and/or validated roadside chemical tests will result in the suspension of the person’s driver’s license.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.48

Driving while impaired by cannabis, or transporting it illegally, can cost a medical cannabis registry card holder their card for two years.

The registry card is a privilege that rides alongside the license, and it can be taken separately. Two years is longer than most suspensions.

Driving while impaired by the use of cannabis or illegal transportation of cannabis in a motor vehicle may result in the loss of driving privileges and, for a medical cannabis registry card holder, the revocation of the driver’s medical cannabis card for two years.

On the test

From what age does Illinois allow the use of cannabis?

21 years and older. Legal to use is not legal to drive on, which is the confusion this whole section exists to clear up. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.48: “Illinois law allows for the medical and recreational use of cannabis for persons ages 21 and older.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
