Blood alcohol concentration — Illinois Permit Test

Blood alcohol concentration on the Illinois permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

It is illegal to drive in Illinois with a blood-alcohol concentration of .08% or more.

That is the line where the state stops arguing about whether you were impaired. Below it a driver can still be convicted on how they drove.

It is illegal to drive if your BAC is .08% or more.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.48

A driver can be convicted of driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol concentration below .08% if their driving ability is impaired.

The number is a ceiling, not a safe level. Impairment starts with the first drink and the offense follows the driving, not the reading.

However, you can be convicted of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) if your BAC is less than .08% but your driving ability is impaired.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.48

Blood-alcohol concentration is a measurement of the alcohol in the body taken from breath, blood, urine or another bodily substance.

The reading can come from several kinds of test, which is why refusing one test does not end the matter.

Blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) is a measurement of the amount of alcohol in your system based on a test of your breath, blood, urine, or other bodily substance.

Time is the only thing that removes the effects of alcohol, and food, coffee and showers do not speed up how fast the body clears it.

Every folk remedy works on how awake you feel rather than on the alcohol. The liver runs at its own pace whatever you do.

Time is the only way to remove the effects of alcohol. Food, coffee, and showers do not speed up the elimination of alcohol from your body.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.48

It is illegal to drive in Illinois with any trace of a controlled drug, substance or intoxicating compound in the blood.

For an illegal drug there is no threshold at all. Any trace is the whole of the test.

It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle on Illinois highways with any trace of a controlled drug, substance, or intoxicating compound in the blood.

On the test

At what blood-alcohol concentration is it illegal to drive in Illinois?

.08% or more. That is the line where the state stops arguing about whether you were impaired. Below it a driver can still be convicted on how they drove. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.48: “It is illegal to drive if your BAC is .08% or more.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
