Turning — Illinois Permit Test
Turning on the Illinois permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A driver making a right turn should follow the general curve of the curb and stay as close to it as possible, turning into the right-hand lane of the road being entered.
Swinging wide on a right turn takes you into the lane beside you. Hugging the curb also leaves no gap for a cyclist to be caught in.
Follow the general curve of the curb while making the right turn. Stay as close as possible to the curb. • Turn into the right-hand lane of the roadway you are entering.
A driver turning left must point the wheels straight ahead until starting to make the turn.
Wheels turned left while you wait mean a tap from behind pushes you into oncoming traffic. Straight wheels push you forward instead.
Point the wheels straight ahead until starting to make the turn.
A driver completing a left turn should finish it in the lane closest to the intended direction.
Cutting across into the far lane meets anybody turning the other way into the same road. The near lane is the one nobody else is aiming for.
Complete the turn into the lane closest to the intended direction.
A driver turning right must yield the right of way to pedestrians, emergency vehicles and other vehicles in the intersection, and should check traffic approaching from the left.
A right turn feels small, so drivers look only where they are going. The traffic that hits you is coming from the side you did not check.
Check traffic approaching from the left.
A driver turning right should expect trucks and buses to need more space, and should check for bicyclists approaching the intersection and for bike lanes.
A truck turning right swings left first, and a cyclist beside it goes under the trailer. Both are things the mirror shows only if you look.
Be aware of bike lanes and check for bicyclists approaching the intersection.
Before moving from the right-hand lane to the left-hand lane a driver must check behind and to the left by turning their head and looking at the area.
A mirror leaves a car-sized hole beside your back door. Turning your head is the only way to see into it.
When moving your vehicle from the right-hand lane to the left-hand lane, check for traffic behind your vehicle and to the left by turning your head and visually assessing the area.
On the test
Into which lane does an Illinois driver complete a right turn?
The right-hand lane of the road being entered. Swinging wide on a right turn takes you into the lane beside you. Hugging the curb also leaves no gap for a cyclist to be caught in. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.31: “Follow the general curve of the curb while making the right turn. Stay as close as possible to the curb. • Turn into the right-hand lane of the roadway you are entering.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
