Construction zones — Illinois Permit Test
Construction zones on the Illinois permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A driver approaching or entering a highway construction or maintenance area must slow down, stop using a wireless phone, yield to workers and authorized vehicles, change to a lane away from the workers where possible, and proceed with caution.
A work zone puts people on foot a lane away from traffic. Every part of the rule is about making that lane emptier and slower.
When approaching or entering a highway construction or maintenance area (also known as work zones), Illinois law requires motorists to slow down, discontinue wireless/cellphone use (unless using a hands-free device that may include the use of a single-sided headset), yield to any authorized vehicles or workers in the area, change to a lane away from the workers when possible, and proceed with caution.
A posted construction zone speed limit must be obeyed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whether or not workers are present.
Drivers slow for the people and speed up when the zone looks empty. The narrow lanes and the drop-offs are there at three in the morning too.
Motorists must obey the posted construction zone speed limit 24 hours a day, seven days a week, regardless of the presence of workers.
A driver must keep a reduced speed when leaving a work zone until safely past any workers or authorized vehicles.
The end of the cones is not the end of the people. Accelerating at the last barrel passes the workers at full speed.
Maintain a reduced speed when leaving the work zone until safely past any workers or authorized vehicles.
Every construction zone in Illinois is a no passing zone.
Passing needs room the work zone has taken away, and the lane beside you may end at a barrel. Illinois removes the judgment call entirely.
In a construction zone. All construction zones in Illinois are no passing zones.
On the test
What must an Illinois driver do when entering a highway construction zone?
Slow down, stop phone use, yield and move a lane away. A work zone puts people on foot a lane away from traffic. Every part of the rule is about making that lane emptier and slower. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.25: “When approaching or entering a highway construction or maintenance area (also known as work zones), Illinois law requires motorists to slow down, discontinue wireless/cellphone use (unless using a hands-free device that may include the use of a single-sided headset), yield to any authorized vehicles or workers in the area, change to a lane away from the workers when possible, and proceed with caution.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
