Large vehicles — Illinois Permit Test

Large vehicles on the Illinois permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A driver of a smaller vehicle should stay out of a large vehicle’s blind spots and keep a visible position when following one.

A truck driver who cannot see you in the mirrors does not know you are there. Sitting in that space is the whole of the risk.

Stay out of blind spots and maintain a visible position when following a large vehicle. Drivers of large vehicles should be able to see surrounding vehicles in their side mirrors.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.45

Large vehicles make wide right turns and sometimes leave an open space to the right just before turning.

The gap that opens on the right is not an invitation, it is the swing of the trailer. Driving into it puts you under the turn.

Pay close attention to turn signals and give large vehicles plenty of room to maneuver and make turns. Large vehicles make wide right turns and sometimes leave an open space to the right just before the turn.

A driver should always dim their headlights when following a truck at night, because bright lights reflect off the large side mirrors into the driver’s eyes.

A truck mirror throws your high beams straight back at the person steering it. Dimming them keeps the driver in front able to see.

Always dim headlights when following a truck at night. Bright lights will blind the drivers of large vehicles when they reflect off the large side mirrors.

Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.45

A driver passing a truck should blink their headlights to let the truck driver know, especially at night, and should complete the pass as quickly as possible.

The truck driver often cannot see the front of your car at all. The flash is the only way to say that the lane is clear behind you.

Blink the vehicle’s headlights when passing a truck to let the truck driver know, especially at night. The truck driver may make it easier by staying to the far side of the lane. The pass should be completed as quickly as possible to avoid staying alongside the truck.

On the test

Where should an Illinois driver avoid sitting behind a large vehicle?

In its blind spots. A truck driver who cannot see you in the mirrors does not know you are there. Sitting in that space is the whole of the risk. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.45: “Stay out of blind spots and maintain a visible position when following a large vehicle. Drivers of large vehicles should be able to see surrounding vehicles in their side mirrors.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
