Funeral processions — Illinois Permit Test
Funeral processions on the Illinois permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A driver meeting a funeral procession must yield the right of way to every vehicle in the procession.
A procession only works if it stays together, and drivers who cut into it split the line. Yielding to all of it is what keeps it one group.
Motorists encountering a funeral procession must yield the right of way to all vehicles in the procession.
A driver must not drive between vehicles in an organized funeral procession unless a law enforcement officer directs it.
Cutting into the line separates people who are following the car in front and nothing else. Only an officer directing traffic can break it.
Motorists should NOT drive between vehicles in an organized funeral procession except when directed by a law enforcement officer.
Vehicles in a funeral procession should drive with their headlights and hazard lights turned on.
The lights are what tell approaching drivers this is a procession and not ordinary traffic. Without them nobody knows to yield.
Motorists in a funeral procession should have their headlights and hazard lights turned on.
A vehicle may not join a funeral procession to gain the right of way or pass another vehicle in it, except where a passing lane has been provided, and a local municipality may impound a vehicle that interferes with a procession through reckless driving.
Cutting into the line to jump traffic steals a right of way that was given to mourners. A town can take the vehicle off the road for it, not just write a ticket.
Vehicles are prohibited from joining a funeral procession to secure the right of way or attempt to pass any vehicle in an organized funeral procession, except where a passing lane has been specifically provided. Local municipalities may impound a vehicle that interferes with a funeral procession due to reckless driving.
On the test
What must an Illinois driver do when meeting a funeral procession?
Yield the right of way to all its vehicles. A procession only works if it stays together, and drivers who cut into it split the line. Yielding to all of it is what keeps it one group. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.26: “Motorists encountering a funeral procession must yield the right of way to all vehicles in the procession.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
