Vehicle registration and title — Illinois Permit Test
Vehicle registration and title on the Illinois permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Registering a vehicle gives the state a record of it and allows it to be used legally on Illinois roads, and registration requires an Illinois Certificate of Title, which is the document proving ownership.
The title and the registration do different jobs: one proves who owns the car, the other allows it on the road. A vehicle can have a title and not be registered.
To register a vehicle in Illinois, you must have an Illinois Certificate of Title. This document proves ownership.
All vehicles and mobile homes must have a Certificate of Title whether or not they are registered.
A car sitting in a barn still has an owner, and the title is the record of it. Registration is only about using the road.
All vehicles and mobile homes must have a Certificate of Title, whether or not they are registered.
Illinois registration fees are paid annually, and a $20 late fee is charged on a registration renewed more than one month past its expiration date.
One month is the grace, and the fee starts the day after it. Annual means there is no multi-year option to forget about.
Registration fees must be paid annually. A $20 late fee is assessed on registrations renewed more than one month past the expiration date.
A vehicle registration ID card comes with the license plates or sticker and must be carried in the vehicle or with the driver.
It is the third document an officer asks for, after the license and the insurance. Leaving it at home is a stop that takes longer.
When you receive the license plates/sticker, you will also receive a vehicle registration ID card that must be carried in your vehicle or with you when driving.
On the test
Which Illinois document proves ownership of a vehicle?
The Certificate of Title. The title and the registration do different jobs: one proves who owns the car, the other allows it on the road. A vehicle can have a title and not be registered. Illinois Rules of the Road 2026, p.95: “To register a vehicle in Illinois, you must have an Illinois Certificate of Title. This document proves ownership.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
