Move over law — Indiana Permit Test
Move over law on the Indiana permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
When approaching an emergency vehicle with flashing red, red and white, or red and blue lights, change lanes away from it; if you cannot, slow to 10 mph under the posted limit and proceed with caution.
Officers and medics working beside traffic are killed by drivers who pass too close and too fast.
If you cannot move over, the motorists shall reduce their speed to 10 mph under the posted limit and proceed with caution.
Failing to move over or slow down for an emergency vehicle with flashing lights is a Class A infraction.
It is a Class A infraction, a step above the Class B for amber lights, because the people at risk are standing in the road.
Failure to comply is a Class A Infraction.
The Move Over law also covers parked tow trucks, highway maintenance, utility, trash and survey vehicles showing flashing amber lights.
Road crews and tow operators work just as close to traffic as police do.
Additionally, motorists who approach an authorized parked vehicle with amber flashing lights are required to change lanes away from the authorized vehicle.
Failing to move over or slow down for a parked vehicle with amber lights, or for a disabled vehicle with hazard lights, is a Class B infraction.
Anyone stopped beside the road is at risk from passing traffic, not only officers.
Failure to do so is a Class B Infraction.
When approaching a disabled vehicle with its hazard lights flashing, change lanes away from it or slow to 10 mph under the limit.
A stranded driver may be changing a tire just inches from your lane.
Motorists who approach a disabled stationary vehicle with flashing hazard warning signals are required to change lanes away from the disabled vehicle.
On the test
You cannot change lanes away from a stopped police car with flashing lights. What must you do?
Slow to 10 mph under the limit and go with caution. Officers and medics working beside traffic are killed by drivers who pass too close and too fast. Indiana Driver's Manual, p.51: “If you cannot move over, the motorists shall reduce their speed to 10 mph under the posted limit and proceed with caution.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
