School buses — Indiana Permit Test

School buses on the Indiana permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Flashing amber lights on a school bus warn that it is slowing to stop and load or unload children.

The amber lights give you time to slow before the red lights come on.

When the school bus driver activates the amber lights, he or she is warning other drivers that the bus is slowing and is going to load or unload children.

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.51

You must stop when you approach a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm out.

Children cross the road at the bus, and they are hard to see around it.

You must stop when you approach a school bus with flashing red lights activated and stop arm extended.

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.52

On a road divided by a barrier or an unimproved median, you must stop for a school bus only if you are traveling in the same direction as the bus.

The barrier keeps children from crossing to the far side, so oncoming traffic may go on.

If you are driving on a roadway divided by a barrier or unimproved median, you are required to stop only if you are traveling in the same direction as the school bus.

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.52

Disregarding a school bus stop arm can be a Class A misdemeanor, a Level 6 felony if it injures someone, or a Level 5 felony if it causes a death.

The penalties are heavy because the people at risk are children.

Disregarding a school bus stop arm can result in a Class A misdemeanor, a Level 6 felony if the offense results in bodily injury, or a Level 5 felony if the offense results in death.

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.52

Near a school bus stop, watch for children, who may dart into the street without looking if they are late.

The biggest danger to children who ride a bus is getting on and off, not the ride.

The biggest threat to children who ride a bus to school is not the ride but approaching or leaving the bus.

On the test

What do flashing amber lights on a school bus mean?

The bus is slowing to stop for children. The amber lights give you time to slow before the red lights come on. Indiana Driver's Manual, p.51: “When the school bus driver activates the amber lights, he or she is warning other drivers that the bus is slowing and is going to load or unload children.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
