Intermediate license — Kentucky Permit Test

Intermediate license on the Kentucky permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

After holding the permit 180 days and reaching age 17, a Kentucky driver may schedule a skills test appointment to apply for an intermediate license.

Both conditions have to be met. Six months on the permit does nothing on its own if the driver is still sixteen.

After holding the permit for 180 days and reaching age 17 the driver may schedule an appointment with the Kentucky State Police

Kentucky Driver Manual, p.6

The Kentucky intermediate license is obtained by passing the skills or road test.

The written test is behind the driver by this point. What stands between a permit and an intermediate license is the drive itself.

The intermediate license is obtained by passing the skills/road test.

Kentucky Driver Manual, p.6

After a successful road test the Kentucky State Police examiner places an Intermediate License sticker on the driver's permit.

The sticker is the license for now. There is no new card until the full unrestricted stage.

After successfully completing the road test, the Kentucky State Police examiner will place an “Intermediate License” sticker on the driver’s permit.

Kentucky Driver Manual, p.6

A Kentucky intermediate license holder must have the license in their possession at all times when driving.

The sticker on the permit is the license, and it has to be in the car with the driver.

The driver shall have the intermediate license in possession at all times when operating a motor vehicle.

Kentucky Driver Manual, p.6

A Kentucky intermediate license holder may not drive between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. unless there is good cause such as an emergency, school or work.

The curfew does not end with the permit. A driver who works a late shift can drive home, but only for a reason like that.

The driver is not permitted to drive between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. unless the driver can demonstrate a good cause for driving, such as emergencies, school, or work-related activities.

Kentucky Driver Manual, p.6

A Kentucky intermediate license holder under 18 is limited to one unrelated passenger under 20 years of age.

The passenger limit follows the driver into the intermediate stage, because the risk it guards against has not changed.

Passenger restriction if the driver is under 18 – limited to 1 (one) unrelated person under 20 years of age.

Kentucky Driver Manual, p.7

A Kentucky driver under 18 who accumulates more than six points may have their driving privilege suspended.

Six points is about two ordinary tickets. An adult gets twice that allowance.

A driver under the age of 18 who accumulates more than six points may have their driving privilege suspended.

On the test

What must a Kentucky driver have done before applying for an intermediate license?

Held the permit 180 days and reached age 17. Both conditions have to be met. Six months on the permit does nothing on its own if the driver is still sixteen. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.6: “After holding the permit for 180 days and reaching age 17 the driver may schedule an appointment with the Kentucky State Police”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
