Kentucky Permit Practice Test — Written Test, Free to Start
Free 10-question Kentucky permit practice test, then 25-question practice tests, each question cited to the Kentucky Driver Manual.
The exam
This practice test is 25 questions, and 20 correct is a pass. Everything on it comes out of Kentucky Driver Manual. Officially it is the knowledge test; most people call it the written test, or the permit test.
Kentucky does not publish how many questions its knowledge test asks. This practice test asks 25, and passes at the 80% set by Kentucky’s own rules (the Kentucky Driver Manual, printed p.11: “Applicants must make a minimum score of 80% to pass this test.”).
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
Ask a question about Kentucky road law
Easier than searching the manual: ask in your own words — how far from a fire hydrant you may park, when you must stop for a school bus — and the answer comes from Kentucky Driver Manual or Kentucky’s code, with the page or the section it is in. When neither says, the answer says so rather than guess. Or tick Nationwide and compare every state on one question.

Questions from the Kentucky test
Why does Kentucky say it issues a driver's license?
To make sure each driver has the basic skills to drive safely. The book is not a formality. It is the only place the state tells you what it will ask you about, so the test and the manual cover the same ground. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.1: “Kentucky issues a driver’s license to ensure that each driver has the basic skills necessary to be a safe, efficient, and responsible driver.”
In Kentucky, what decides which class of license a driver needs?
The vehicle being driven. A driver who picks a class by the license they want rather than the vehicle they drive ends up tested on the wrong book. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.1: “In Kentucky, there are several types of driver’s licenses represented by classes, and the vehicle driven determines the type of license needed”
Which tests must a Kentucky moped license applicant pass?
The general knowledge and vision tests. The moped route skips the road test and the permit, which is why it is the one credential a learner can finish in a single visit. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.2: “Applicants are required to pass the general knowledge and vision tests to be issued a moped license. However, a skills test and permit are not required.”
How does Kentucky define a motorcycle?
A motor-driven vehicle with a seat or saddle on no more than three wheels. The number of wheels is what decides whether the machine needs a motorcycle license, not how fast it goes or what it is called. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.3: “A motorcycle is defined as any motor-driven vehicle having a seat or saddle for the use of the operator and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground but excluding mopeds, tractors, and vehicles on which the operator and passengers ride in an enclosed cab.”
Where does a Kentucky license applicant begin the process?
By completing an application at a Transportation Cabinet Regional Office. Two agencies share the job. The Cabinet takes the paperwork and the state police run the tests, so the order of the visits matters. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.4: “However, all applicants will begin the process by completing an application at a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Regional Driver Licensing Office.”
How many phases of licensing must a Kentucky driver under 18 go through?
Three phases. Nobody under eighteen goes straight to a full license. Each stage lifts one restriction at a time. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.5: “Drivers under 18 must go through three phases of licensing: a Learner’s Permit, an Intermediate License, and then a Full Unrestricted License.”
How old must a Kentucky driver be to apply for a permit?
At least 15. Fifteen is the gate. Everything in the graduated system is counted from the day the permit is issued, so the birthday sets the timetable. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.5: “Drivers must be at least 15 years of age to take the vision and written knowledge tests and apply for a permit.”
How many hours of practice driving must a Kentucky driver log for an intermediate license?
60 hours. Sixty hours is roughly an hour a day across the permit period, and it is the part of the process that actually builds the skill. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.5: “To be eligible for an intermediate license, a driver must complete a Practice Driving Log with a minimum of 60 hours of practice driving.”
What must a Kentucky driver have done before applying for an intermediate license?
Held the permit 180 days and reached age 17. Both conditions have to be met. Six months on the permit does nothing on its own if the driver is still sixteen. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.6: “After holding the permit for 180 days and reaching age 17 the driver may schedule an appointment with the Kentucky State Police”
What makes a Kentucky driver eligible for a full unrestricted license?
180 days on the intermediate license, driver education completed, and age 17. Three conditions again, and the driver education course is the one people forget until the office turns them away. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.6: “Drivers are eligible for a full unrestricted license after holding an intermediate license for 180 days while also having completed the driver education requirements and reaching age 17.”
By when must a Kentucky driver permitted under 18 enroll in an approved driver training program?
Before their eighteenth birthday. The course is not optional for anyone who started young, and the deadline is a birthday rather than a date the office sets. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.7: “issued under 18 shall, before the person’s eighteenth birthday, enroll in an approved driver training program, and must complete the program before moving to the full, unrestricted licensing phase.”
How long must a Kentucky applicant aged 18 to 20 hold a permit before the road test?
180 days. Turning eighteen does not shorten the wait. The six months still has to be served. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.8: “You must hold the permit for 180 days before you are eligible to take the road test.”
How long must a Kentucky applicant aged 21 or over hold a permit before the road test?
30 days. The wait for an adult beginner is one month rather than six, and practice is still expected during it. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.9: “You must hold the permit for 30 days before you are eligible to take the road test.”
What proof of identity must a Kentucky permit applicant bring?
An original birth certificate or certified copy. A photocopy is turned away every time, so the original has to be found before the trip rather than after it. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.9: “One (1) proof of identity document – original Birth Certificate or certified copy”
Who must take a Kentucky vision screening?
Every first-time applicant. The eyes are checked before anything else, because a driver who cannot read a sign cannot be taught to obey it. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.10: “A vision screening is required for all first-time applicants.”
What minimum score does Kentucky require to pass the written test?
80% correct. Eighty percent is the one exam figure Kentucky publishes, and knowing the bar in advance is what tells a learner when they are ready. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.11: “Applicants must make a minimum score of 80% to pass this test.”
How is Kentucky State Police driver testing conducted?
By appointment only. There is no line to join. A driver who arrives without a booking is turned away whatever the office looks like inside. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.13: “All testing is conducted by appointment only.”
What must be true of a vehicle used for a Kentucky road test?
It must be properly registered and insured. An examiner checks the paperwork before the car moves, and a lapsed registration ends the appointment there. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.9: “Vehicles used for testing must be appropriately registered, and proof of liability insurance is required.”
Which maneuver is part of the Kentucky road test?
Stopping and starting on a hill. Everything on that list is practiced or it is not. The test is not a drive around the block. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.13: “The test will consist of stops, backing, turning the car around, stopping and starting on a hill, parallel parking, intersection approaches”
Which control must a Kentucky applicant demonstrate at the vehicle inspection?
The dimmer switch. These are the controls a driver reaches for without looking, and the examiner checks that before the car moves. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.11: “The applicant will then be required to demonstrate a knowledge of how to operate the following: Headlights Dimmer Switch”
What does Kentucky require of a vehicle's braking system?
Separate means of applying the brakes, each effective on at least two wheels. Two independent systems mean one failure does not leave the car unable to stop at all. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.11: “There shall be separate means of applying the brakes, each of which shall be effective to apply the brakes to at least two wheels.”
How long does a new Kentucky resident have to obtain a Kentucky license?
30 days. The clock starts the day someone moves in, not the day they get around to it. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.13: “Persons moving into Kentucky must obtain a Kentucky Driver's License within 30 days of establishing residence.”
How long may a non-U.S. citizen drive on a valid foreign license and International Permit?
Up to one year from the date of admission. A year is the limit, and the reciprocity list decides whether it applies at all. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.14: “All non-U.S. citizens may drive in the U.S. on their valid foreign license and International Permit for up to one year from the date of admission into the U.S.”
How long does a returning Kentucky service member have to renew an expired license without testing?
90 days from returning to the Commonwealth. Ninety days is the window. Miss it and the whole renewal process starts from scratch. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.15: “If a Kentucky resident has been serving in the United States military and has allowed their operator’s license to expire, they shall, within 90 days of returning to the Commonwealth, be permitted to renew their license without having to take a written test or road test.”
When does a Kentucky license held by a driver under 21 expire?
90 days after the driver's 21st birthday. The under-21 card is deliberately short-lived, because the card itself is what tells a clerk the holder's age. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.16: “If the driver is under age 21, the license expires 90 days after the driver’s 21st birthday.”
How long does a Kentucky driver have to obtain a duplicate license after moving?
10 days. Ten days is short, and the ticket for missing it is real. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.16: “If you change your address or name for any reason, you must obtain a duplicate license within 10 days.”
Which of these can cost a Kentucky driver their license?
Failing to maintain liability insurance. Letting the insurance lapse costs the license as well as the registration, which surprises most drivers. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.16: “Failure to maintain liability insurance;”
How long must a Kentucky driver under 18 wait if a parent withdraws responsibility?
Until they are 18 years of age. That is a long wait for a teenager. The withdrawal is not a suspension that runs out. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.17: “If the parent or legal guardian withdraws responsibility, you will have to wait until you are 18 years of age to obtain a permit and license.”
How many points within two years may suspend a Kentucky driver aged 18 or over?
12 points. Twelve points is a handful of tickets. Under eighteen the allowance is a little more than half of that. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.17: “Upon the accumulation of 12 points (7 points if under age eighteen) within a two-year period, a driver’s privilege to operate a motor vehicle may be suspended.”
How often may a Kentucky driver complete State Traffic School?
Once every twelve months. The school is not a way to clear every ticket. It is available once a year. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.18: “A driver can only complete State Traffic School once every twelve (12) months.”
Where does a Kentucky owner apply to register a vehicle?
With the county clerk in their county of residence. The registration is done at the county clerk, not at a driver licensing office, and the two are often in different buildings. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.19: “Kentucky law requires that before the owner of a motor vehicle may operate or permit its operation upon a highway, the owner must apply for registration with the county clerk in the owner’s county of residence.”
When must a Kentucky owner have insurance on a vehicle?
Before operating it, and for as long as the registration is active. The insurance comes before the first drive, not after the first claim. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.19: “An owner may not operate a vehicle in Kentucky until insurance has been obtained. Also, if your vehicle has a current, active registration, you must maintain insurance on that vehicle.”
What does the Kentucky Medical Review Board do?
Identifies drivers with impairments that hamper safe driving. Some conditions make driving unsafe in ways an ordinary test will not find, and the board is how the state looks at those. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.20: “and advice of the Medical Review Board, which identifies drivers with physical or mental impairments that hamper their ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.”
What is Kentucky's minimum visual acuity for driving?
20/60 or better in at least one eye. One good eye can meet the standard. Two poor ones cannot. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.20: “In Kentucky, visual requirements for driving require an individual to have visual acuity of at least 20/60 or better in at least one eye.”
When can a Kentucky driver sign up as an organ donor?
When the initial license is issued or when it is renewed. The two moments a driver is at the counter are the two moments the state asks. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.21: “licensed drivers can sign up as an organ donor when their initial driver’s license is issued or when the license is renewed.”
What does Kentucky name motor vehicles as a major contributor to?
Ground level ozone. What comes out of the tailpipe ends up in the air people breathe, and children and older adults feel it first. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.21: “Motor vehicles are major contributors to ground level ozone.”
What does poor vision make harder for a driver?
Spotting trouble and responding to it in time. Almost everything a driver decides starts with something they saw, so poor sight makes every other skill late. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.22: “If you cannot see clearly, you will have trouble identifying traffic and roadway conditions, spotting potential trouble, and responding to problems in a timely manner.”
What does Kentucky say hearing warns a driver of?
Danger such as a horn, a siren or screeching tires. A siren behind a building arrives before the ambulance does, and hearing it is the whole warning. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.22: “Your hearing can warn you of danger, the sound of a horn or siren, screeching tires, etc.”
What does fatigue do to a driver?
Affects vision and increases the time to make decisions. A tired driver sees less and takes longer to act on what they do see, which is the same as driving slower than the traffic. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.22: “Fatigue can affect your vision and increase the time to make decisions.”
How does Kentucky define a distraction?
Anything that takes your attention away from driving. The definition is deliberately wide, because the dangerous part is the attention leaving, not the object it went to. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.23: “Simply put, a distraction is anything that takes your attention away from driving.”
How does Kentucky define aggressive driving?
Intentionally committing an act that endangers other persons or property. The word means something specific in Kentucky law rather than just impatience. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.24: “Aggressive driving occurs when an individual intentionally commits an action that endangers other persons or property.”
Which warning sign does Kentucky list for an aging driver?
Getting lost on routes that were once familiar. The sign is not about age itself but about a change, and the person driving is usually the last to see it. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.24: “You sometimes get lost while driving on routes that were once familiar;”
What share of fatal traffic crashes involve alcohol or other impairing drugs?
Approximately 40%. Four in ten fatal crashes. That is the size of the problem the drink-driving law exists for. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.25: “Alcohol and other impairing drugs are involved in approximately 40% of all traffic crashes in which someone is killed each year.”
What is illegal for a Kentucky driver under 21?
Purchasing, possessing and drinking alcoholic beverages. All three are offenses, so possession counts even when nothing has been drunk. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.25: “If you are under the age of 21, it is illegal to purchase, possess, and drink alcoholic beverages.”
What does Kentucky say about drugs other than alcohol?
They can have effects like alcohol's or even worse. A prescription is not permission to drive. The effect on the driver is what matters. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.25: “These drugs can have effects like those of alcohol or even worse.”
At what alcohol concentration is a Kentucky driver in violation of the DUI law?
0.08 or above. Being in physical control counts, so sitting in the driver's seat with the keys is enough. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.26: “In Kentucky, a person shall not operate or be in physical control of a motor vehicle while having an alcohol concentration of 0.08 or above”
What does Kentucky's implied consent law mean?
Operating a vehicle is consent to a lawfully requested test. The agreement was made when the car was driven, not when the officer asked. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.26: “Kentucky implied consent law is based on the principle that when you operate a vehicle, you have implicitly consented to a lawfully requested test of your blood, breath, urine, or any combination of these tests.”
What do aggravating circumstances require in a Kentucky DUI case?

What do Kentucky DUI offenders forfeit during a license suspension?

What does Kentucky say driving on underinflated tires can lead to?
Safety issues on the road. Tires are the only part of the car touching the road, and the problems they cause arrive suddenly. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.28: “Driving on underinflated or overinflated tires or tires with low tread can lead to safety issues on the road.”
Why does Kentucky say to sit upright with your back against the seat?
Because slouching reduces how well the restraint system works. Belts and bags are designed around a person sitting properly. Slouched, they do not catch the body where they should. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.28: “Improper seating positions, such as slouching, can result in reduced effectiveness of the vehicle’s restraint system.”
Why does Kentucky say to keep the windshield clean?
Because bright sun or headlights on a dirty windshield decrease vision. The dirt is invisible until the sun is low, and then the whole windshield turns white. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.29: “Keep the windshield clean because bright sun or headlights on a dirty windshield decreases vision.”
Who must wear a seat belt in a Kentucky vehicle made after 1981?
The driver and all passengers. The rule covers everyone in the car, not only the people in front. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.29: “Kentucky law states a person shall not operate a motor vehicle manufactured after 1981 on the public roadways of this state unless the driver and all passengers are wearing a properly adjusted and fastened seat belt”
How does Kentucky describe air bags?

What height or less requires a Kentucky child restraint system?
40 inches. Height decides this, not age, which surprises parents of a tall three-year-old. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.31: “Kentucky law requires that any driver of a motor vehicle, when transporting a child of forty (40) inches in height or less in a motor vehicle operated on the roadways, streets, and highways of this state, shall have the child properly secured in a child restraint system of a type meeting federal motor vehicle safety standards.”
What risk does Kentucky name when a child is left alone in a vehicle?
The child moving the vehicle and causing a collision. A child left with the keys can release a brake or shift out of park, and the car moves with nobody driving. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.31: “When you leave a child in the vehicle alone, you risk the child moving the vehicle and causing a collision.”
What does Kentucky say about driving with an unsecured load?
It is against the law and extremely dangerous. Anything that comes off a truck arrives in someone else's windshield at the speed of the traffic. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.31: “Driving with an unsecured load is both against the law and extremely dangerous.”
What may a Kentucky vehicle's driver assistance features do?
Provide alerts, or take control by adjusting braking or steering. Some of these systems warn and some of them act, and a driver needs to know which one their car has. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.32: “These safety features may provide alerts, such as sounds or vibration or may take control of the vehicle, such as adjusting the braking or steering.”
What does Kentucky say to do before starting the engine?
Place the right foot on the brake and check the gear selector for park. Checking park before turning the key is what stops the car moving the moment it fires. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.33: “To start the engine, place your right foot on the brake pedal and check the gear selector lever for park.”
Which way is the steering wheel turned when reversing?
In the direction the driver wants the vehicle to move. Reversing feels backwards, and the rule is the simplest way to get it right every time. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.33: “The steering wheel is always turned in the direction you want the vehicle to move, whether moving forward or in reverse.”
Why does Kentucky say to check behind a vehicle before getting in?
Because children and small objects cannot be seen from the driver's seat. The walk around the car is the only way to see what is too low for the mirrors. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.33: “Children and small objects cannot be seen from the driver’s seat.”
What do Kentucky's yielding rules determine?
Which driver should yield and the sequence for entering an intersection. Somebody has to go first, and these rules are how two drivers agree on who without speaking. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.34: “These rules determine which driver should yield the right of way and the sequence for entering and driving through an intersection or other driving scenarios.”
What does Kentucky include among traffic control devices?
Directions given by law enforcement and school crossing guards. A person waving traffic through is a control device in law, exactly like a signal. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.34: “Traffic control devices include traffic signals, signs, pavement markings, and directions provided by law enforcement, highway personnel, and school crossing guards.”
What may a Kentucky driver do on a green light?
Go straight, turn left or turn right unless those turns are prohibited. Green means go if it is clear, not go regardless. Whoever is already in the intersection finishes first. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.35: “GREEN Traffic Light – If the roadway is clear, after yielding the right of way to other vehicles and pedestrians lawfully within the intersection, you may go straight or turn left or turn right, unless such turns are prohibited.”
What must a Kentucky driver do before turning right on red?
Stop, and check that there is no approaching traffic. The stop comes first and is complete. The turn is what happens afterwards if the road is clear. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.35: “You may turn right after stopping if there is no approaching traffic unless a sign is posted prohibiting such right turns.”
What does a flashing yellow light mean in Kentucky?
Slow down and watch for others. A flashing yellow is a warning that something is different about this place. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.35: “A flashing yellow light means you must slow down and watch for others.”
What does a green arrow mean in Kentucky?
You may go in the direction of the arrow if you are in the proper lane. The arrow protects the movement it points at, and only for the lane it belongs to. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.35: “A green arrow means you may go in the direction of the arrow, if you are in the proper lane.”
What do Kentucky traffic signs tell a driver about?
Traffic rules, hazards, location, directions and roadway services. Five different jobs are done by signs, and knowing which job a sign is doing is half of reading it. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.35: “Traffic signs tell you about traffic rules, hazards, roadway location, roadway directions, and the location of roadway services.”
What must a driver do at this sign?
Slow down and let traffic with the right of way cross first. Yielding is not stopping. It is arriving slowly enough that stopping is still possible. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.38: “It means you must slow down and allow traffic that has the right of way to cross before entering.”
What kind of information does this sign give?
Directions to cities, towns and intersecting roads. These are the signs that answer where rather than what, and they are read at a glance at speed. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.38: “They give information on intersecting roads, help direct you to cities and towns, and show points of interest along the highway.”
What does this kind of sign tell a driver?
There may be danger ahead, so slow down and be ready to stop. A warning sign is the road telling a driver to be ready before they can see the reason. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.35: “Warning Signs – These signs tell a driver of possible danger that might be ahead, and alert the driver to slow down and be prepared to stop if necessary.”
What does this sign tell a driver to do?
Slow down, look and listen for a train, and be ready to stop. It is the advance warning, far enough back that a driver can still stop comfortably. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.36: “The sign cautions you to slow down, look and listen for a train or railroad vehicle, and be prepared to stop if a train is approaching.”
What does this sign warn a driver about?
People working on or near the roadway ahead. The people the sign warns about have nothing between them and the traffic. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.37: “These construction, maintenance, or emergency operation signs alert you to work zones ahead and warn you that people are working on or near the roadway.”
How far before a turn does Kentucky say to signal?
100 feet before the turn. A hundred feet is about six car lengths, and it is how much warning the driver behind needs to slow down. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.42: “If you plan to turn at an intersection, signal 100 feet before the turn.”
What is a Kentucky turnabout?
Using a street, alley or driveway to reverse direction legally. It is the legal way to go back the other way, and the road test asks for it. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.43: “A turnabout is a type of turn in which a street, alley, or driveway is used to legally reverse the direction you are traveling when it is not practical or possible to drive around a block.”
What does Kentucky say to do at all intersections?
Reduce speed and search for traffic, pedestrians and hazards. Most crashes between two cars happen where two roads cross, and speed is what takes away the time to avoid them. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.43: “At all intersections, reduce your speed and search for:”
Who yields at a Kentucky roundabout?
Entering traffic yields to circulating traffic. Everything about a roundabout follows from that one rule: the traffic already going around does not stop. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.44: “Vehicles travel counterclockwise around a raised center island, with entering traffic yielding the right of way to circulating traffic.”
Until when must a Kentucky driver remain stopped for a school bus?
