Turns on red — Kentucky Permit Test

Turns on red on the Kentucky permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A Kentucky driver may turn right after stopping at a red light if there is no approaching traffic, unless a sign prohibits such right turns.

The stop comes first and is complete. The turn is what happens afterwards if the road is clear.

You may turn right after stopping if there is no approaching traffic unless a sign is posted prohibiting such right turns.

Kentucky Driver Manual, p.35

A Kentucky left turn on red is permitted only when turning from a one-way street onto a one-way street.

Both streets have to be one-way, which is why this turn is rare and often got wrong.

Even though the light is red, a turn is permitted from a one-way street into the nearest lane of another one-way street running in the direction of that turn.

Kentucky Driver Manual, p.35

A Kentucky driver turning left on red must first stop, then turn left when the roadway is clear of vehicle or pedestrian traffic.

The rule is the same as for a right turn on red: stop completely, then go when nothing is coming.

You must first stop then turn left when the roadway is clear of vehicle or pedestrian traffic.

Kentucky Driver Manual, p.35

A Kentucky right turn on red is allowed only if the driver is in the proper lane and the turn is not prohibited by signs.

Being in the wrong lane makes the turn unlawful even where the light allows it.

Right turns on red – If not prohibited by signs, and you are in the proper lane, you must first stop, and then turn right when the roadway is clear of vehicle or pedestrian traffic.

On the test

What must a Kentucky driver do before turning right on red?

Stop, and check that there is no approaching traffic. The stop comes first and is complete. The turn is what happens afterwards if the road is clear. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.35: “You may turn right after stopping if there is no approaching traffic unless a sign is posted prohibiting such right turns.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
