Traffic signals — Kentucky Permit Test
Traffic signals on the Kentucky permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
On a green light, after yielding to vehicles and pedestrians lawfully in the intersection, a Kentucky driver may go straight, turn left or turn right unless such turns are prohibited.
Green means go if it is clear, not go regardless. Whoever is already in the intersection finishes first.
GREEN Traffic Light – If the roadway is clear, after yielding the right of way to other vehicles and pedestrians lawfully within the intersection, you may go straight or turn left or turn right, unless such turns are prohibited.
A Kentucky driver turning left on a green light must yield to through traffic coming from the opposite direction.
A green light is green for the oncoming car too, and it is not turning.
Left turns on a green light must yield to through traffic coming from the opposite direction.
A yellow light in Kentucky means the signal is about to turn red, and a driver should stop if they can do so safely.
Yellow is a warning rather than an invitation, and the judgment is whether stopping is safe.
YELLOW Traffic Light – A yellow light means the traffic signal is about to turn red. Stop if you can do so safely.
A Kentucky vehicle may clear an intersection on a red light if it entered while the signal was yellow, but entering after the light turns red is against the law.
The question is where the car was when the light changed, not where it is now.
A vehicle may clear an intersection on a red light, if the vehicle entered the intersection while the signal was yellow; but it is against the law to enter an intersection after the light turns red.
A red light in Kentucky means stop behind a crosswalk or stop line until the green light appears.
The line is where the stop happens, and stopping past it puts the car in the crossing.
RED Traffic Light – A red light means “stop” behind a crosswalk or stop line until the green light appears.
When there is more than one traffic light at a Kentucky intersection, a driver obeys the one that is over their lane.
The lights are aimed at particular lanes, and reading the wrong one is how a driver goes on a turn arrow.
When there is more than one traffic light, obey the one that is over your lane.
On the test
What may a Kentucky driver do on a green light?
Go straight, turn left or turn right unless those turns are prohibited. Green means go if it is clear, not go regardless. Whoever is already in the intersection finishes first. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.35: “GREEN Traffic Light – If the roadway is clear, after yielding the right of way to other vehicles and pedestrians lawfully within the intersection, you may go straight or turn left or turn right, unless such turns are prohibited.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
