Motorcyclists — Kentucky Permit Test
Motorcyclists on the Kentucky permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A Kentucky driver allows a motorcyclist a full lane width and does not share the lane, because the motorcycle needs space to react to other traffic.
A lane looks empty beside a motorcycle, and it is not.
Allow a motorcyclist a full lane width. Do not share the lane.
A Kentucky driver should be alert for motorcycles by looking carefully to the front and sides before turning left.
The left turn across traffic is where most car-and-motorcycle crashes happen.
Before turning left, be alert for motorcycles by looking carefully to the front and sides of your vehicle.
A Kentucky driver should not assume a motorcycle is turning when its turn signal is flashing, because motorcycle turn signals may not self-cancel.
A rider who forgot to cancel a signal looks exactly like a rider about to turn.
Motorcycle turn signals may not self-cancel, and the motorcyclist may have forgotten to turn them off.
A Kentucky driver following a motorcyclist allows a minimum four-second following distance, or more in wet conditions.
A motorcycle can stop shorter than a car, which leaves the driver behind with less room than they think.
When following a motorcyclist, allow for a minimum 4-second following distance or more in wet conditions
Kentucky motorcycle riders may suddenly need to change speed or lane position to avoid potholes, gravel, wet surfaces, pavement seams, railroad crossings and grooved pavement.
A ridge in the road that a car drives over can put a motorcycle down.
Motorcycle riders may suddenly need to change speed or adjust lane position to avoid hazards such as potholes, gravel, wet or slippery surfaces, pavement seams, railroad crossings, and grooved pavement
Kentucky reminds drivers that scooters and mopeds travel at much lower speeds than motorcycles.
Closing on a moped at highway speed happens far faster than closing on a motorcycle.
Keep in mind that scooters and mopeds travel at much lower speeds than motorcycles.
Kentucky motorcyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as other drivers, but it may be more difficult to see them.
The rules are the same. Being seen is the part that is not.
Motorcyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as other drivers.
On the test
How much of a lane does Kentucky say to allow a motorcyclist?
A full lane width. A lane looks empty beside a motorcycle, and it is not. Kentucky Driver Manual, p.62: “Allow a motorcyclist a full lane width. Do not share the lane.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
