Civil motor vehicle infractions — Massachusetts Permit Test
Civil motor vehicle infractions on the Massachusetts permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
You have 20 days to pay a civil motor vehicle infraction fine or request a hearing to dispute it.
Twenty days is short and the clock does not stop. Missing it is being found responsible without anybody hearing your side.
If you get a citation from a police officer for a civil motor vehicle infraction (CMVI), you must pay the required fine or request a hearing to dispute it. You have 20 days to do this.
Every fine for a civil motor vehicle infraction under Chapter 89 or 90 carries an added $5 public safety surcharge.
The surcharge goes on every one of them, so the number on the citation is never the number you pay.
Every fine for a CMVI that comes from Chapter 89 or 90 of the Massachusetts General Laws will have an added $5 public safety surcharge.
Requesting a hearing costs a $25 filing fee, which is refunded if a court finds you not responsible for all violations on the citation.
The fee is refundable only on a clean result. Winning part of a citation does not get it back.
If you request a hearing, you must pay a $25 filing fee to the RMV.
Failing to respond to a citation within 20 days means you are found responsible and charged a large late fee.
Doing nothing is a decision the system reads as agreement, and then it costs more than paying would have.
If you do not respond to a citation within 20 days, you will be found responsible and charged a large late fee.
Failure to pay a citation and its late fee will cause your license to be suspended.
An unpaid ticket becomes a suspension without anybody deciding it should. The paperwork does it.
Failure to pay the citation and late fee will cause your license to be suspended.
Paying a fine means accepting responsibility for that violation, and your driving record will show it.
Paying to make it go away does not make it go away. It is the fastest way to put the violation on the record.
When you pay a fine, you accept responsibility for that violation.
Parking violations are not civil motor vehicle infractions, and are handled by the city or town that issued them.
They never reach the Registry as violations, but an unpaid one still blocks a renewal. That is the sting in the tail.
They are handled by the city or town that issued the citations or tickets.
On the test
How long do you have to pay a civil motor vehicle infraction or request a hearing?
20 days. Twenty days is short and the clock does not stop. Missing it is being found responsible without anybody hearing your side. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.56: “If you get a citation from a police officer for a civil motor vehicle infraction (CMVI), you must pay the required fine or request a hearing to dispute it. You have 20 days to do this.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
