Massachusetts Permit Practice Test — RMV Written Test, 25 Questions

Free 10-question Massachusetts permit practice test, then full 25-question tests like the RMV exam (18 to pass), each question cited to the Massachusetts Driver's Manual.

The exam

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles knowledge test is 25 questions, and 18 correct is a pass. Everything on it comes out of Massachusetts Driver's Manual. Officially it is the knowledge test; most people call it the written test, or the permit test.

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

Ask a question about Massachusetts road law

Easier than searching the manual: ask in your own words — how far from a fire hydrant you may park, when you must stop for a school bus — and the answer comes from Massachusetts Driver's Manual or Massachusetts’s code, with the page or the section it is in. When neither says, the answer says so rather than guess. Or tick Nationwide and compare every state on one question.

What Massachusetts tests

132 concepts, 766 separate rules. Each one is a page of its own.

Questions from the Massachusetts test

Where does the Massachusetts license requirement apply?

On any public road, highway, or other way open to the public. A parking lot behind a store is open to the public, so the license rule reaches it. Drivers who think the rule stops at the town line get caught on exactly that ground. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.1: “you must have a valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle on any public road, highway, or other way permitting access to the public”

What is the minimum age to apply for a Class D learner's permit?

16 years old. Sixteen is where the whole process starts. Nothing before it counts, and a birthday is the only thing that moves it. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.3: “To apply for a Class D (passenger vehicle) or a Class M (motorcycle) learner's permit, you must be at least 16.”

What corrected visual acuity does a full Class D license require in the better eye?

20/40. Reading a sign late is the same as not reading it. The standard is set where a driver can still take in a sign in time to act on it. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.5: “your vision must be at least 20/40 visual acuity in your better eye (corrected) and at least 120 degrees of horizontal peripheral vision (both eyes together) for a full license.”

Which Massachusetts license class covers passenger vehicles, vans, and small trucks?

Class D. Every other class is an exception to this one. Knowing which license you are working toward is how the rest of the chapter reads straight. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.1: “The Class D license, which is most common, is for passenger vehicles, vans, and small trucks.”

How do the driving privileges of a Standard license compare with a REAL ID license?

They are the same. The choice between the two cards is about flying and federal buildings, not about driving. Picking the standard card costs you nothing on the road. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.6: “A Standard Massachusetts Driver's License offers the same driving privileges as a REAL ID Massachusetts Driver's License.”

How long is a Massachusetts driver's license valid?

A maximum of five years. Tying it to a birthday is what makes it easy to remember. Driving past the date is driving unlicensed, and nobody sends a reminder on the day. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.7: “A Massachusetts driver's license is valid for a maximum of five years and typically expires on your birthday.”

How are restrictions on a Massachusetts license shown?

By code letters on the front and back of the license. The letters are not decoration. Driving outside one of them is driving outside your license, and an officer reads the code before anything else. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.8: “Your driver's license may be issued with various restrictions, which are indicated by code letters on the front and back of your license.”

What must a driver obtain before applying for any Massachusetts license?

A learner's permit. There is no route to a license that skips the permit. Every path through this chapter runs through it, including a road test you have already booked. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.14: “You must obtain a learner's permit before you can apply for any license.”

How many questions are on the Massachusetts learner's permit exam?

25 questions. Twenty-five questions is a short paper, which means every one of them counts for four percent of the result. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.16: “Each learner's permit exam has 25 multiple-choice questions.”

What must a permit holder carry whenever they drive?

Their learner's permit. Practicing without the permit on you is driving unlicensed as far as the stop goes. It costs nothing to keep it in a pocket. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.18: “You must carry your learner's permit whenever you drive until you earn a Junior Operator's License or a full driver's license.”

How long must a permit be held before a Junior Operator's road test?

Six consecutive months. The six months are consecutive, so a suspension does not pause them, it restarts them. That is the trap a driver finds out about the week of the test. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.9: “Have a valid learner's permit for at least six consecutive months”

Who may a new Junior Operator carry in the first six months?

Immediate family members under 18, and passengers 18 or over. Friends in the car are the single biggest thing that distracts a new driver. The six months are there to get the driving solid before the car fills up. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.10: “You may not operate a motor vehicle within the first six months after receiving your JOL while any person under age 18 is in the vehicle (other than you or an immediate family member)”

Who must take professional driving lessons in Massachusetts?

Drivers under age 18. It is a requirement rather than a recommendation for anyone under 18. Practicing with a parent alone does not satisfy it. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.19: “The RMV requires drivers under age 18 to take professional driving lessons at a local high school or driver school.”

What must a driver have to schedule a road test?

A learner's permit of the proper class. A Class D permit does not book a motorcycle test. The class of the permit has to match the license being applied for. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.20: “you must have a learner's permit of the proper class to schedule a test”

What must a Class D road test sponsor be?

At least 21, with a year of driving experience. The sponsor is the adult who takes responsibility for the drive home. Arriving without one means the test does not happen. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.23: “When you arrive at the test location, you must be accompanied by a licensed operator who... • Is at least 21 years old • Has had at least one year of driving experience”

How far must a candidate be able to back the vehicle during a road test?

Approximately 50 feet. Reversing in a straight line for that distance is where a driver who only ever looks at the mirror comes unstuck. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.25: “Back the vehicle approximately 50 feet”

How long is a validated permit valid as a temporary license?

Up to 60 days. The permit in your hand turns into the license while the card is printed. It runs out at 60 days, which is also the deadline for paying if you did not. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.27: “If you pass the road test, have prepaid for your license, and have no outstanding obligations, the examiner will validate your learner's permit and it will become a temporary license, valid up to 60 days (unless the permit expires before that).”

What must a Junior Operator provide when converting a license from another state?

A certified copy of the driving record from that state. The Registry cannot see another state's teen record through its usual checks. The certified copy is how the six clean months get proved. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.27: “License Conversion for a Junior Operator requires that you provide a certified copy of your driving record from the state you are leaving”

What does registering as a donor with the Registry amount to?

Legal consent for donation, recorded in the Donor Registry. The registry entry is the consent itself, not a note of intent. Telling your family as well is what stops an argument at the worst moment. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.30: “you will be entered into the Massachusetts Donor Registry, which is legal consent for donation”

What is the Massachusetts road test fee?

A $35 fee. The fee buys the slot rather than the result. Every way of not using the slot costs the same thing. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.32: “Road test fee - $35.00”

What does the Veteran's Indicator cost?

Nothing extra. It costs nothing and can be added at a renewal or a duplicate. Proof of the discharge has to be brought in person. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.29: “There is no additional fee for the Veteran's Indicator.”

What safety belt does every passenger vehicle need?

A working, undamaged belt for the driver and all passengers. A frayed belt is the same as no belt in a crash. The law asks for one that works, not one that is merely installed. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.34: “Each passenger vehicle must have all of the following: • A working, undamaged safety belt for the driver and all passengers”

How far may side and rear windows be darkened?

Up to 35 percent. The windshield is the one piece of glass the driver has to see through in every condition. Dark side glass also hides whether a driver has seen you. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.34: “You can darken your side and rear windows up to 35 percent. It is illegal to tint your windshield.”

Who must wear a safety belt in a Massachusetts passenger vehicle?

Every person in the vehicle. It reaches everybody in the car, not only the front seats. An unbelted passenger in the back is a loose weight that hits whoever is in front of them. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.35: “Massachusetts law requires every person in a passenger motor vehicle (including vans and small trucks under 18,000 lbs.) to wear a safety belt or sit in a child passenger restraint.”

Until when must a child sit in a child passenger restraint?

Until at least eight years old or at least 57 inches tall. Either one ends the requirement, whichever comes first. An adult belt on a small child crosses the neck instead of the chest. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.36: “Infants and small children must sit in federally approved child passenger restraints until they... 1. Are at least eight years old or 2. At least fifty-seven inches tall”

What are front air bags made for?

Head-on crashes, working together with safety belts. Front air bags do nothing in a side or rear impact, and nothing at all for an unbelted body already out of position. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.37: “Front air bags are only made for head-on crashes and do not protect you in crashes from the side or back.”

What may not block a driver's view of the road?

Anything on the dashboard, windshield, or hanging from the mirror. A hanging ornament covers exactly the piece of road a motorcycle arrives from. It is a small object in front of a large blind spot. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.38: “Nothing inside your vehicle, on your dashboard, on your windshield, or hanging from your rear view mirror can block your view of the road in front of you or through your mirrors.”

What does Massachusetts law prohibit while driving?

Using a hand-held mobile electronic device. The ban is on holding it at all, not on typing. A phone in the hand is a hand off the wheel and eyes off the road. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.39: “The use of hand-held mobile electronic devices (including cell phones) while driving is prohibited in Massachusetts”

Why should a driver keep space around the vehicle?

So they can change lanes suddenly to avoid a crash. A gap you have not left is a gap you cannot use. Being boxed in turns somebody else's mistake into your crash. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.41: “Maintain space around vehicle in case you need to suddenly change lanes to avoid a crash.”

Which medicines should keep a driver out of the car?

Prescription or over-the-counter medicines that can cause drowsiness. A pharmacy label is the warning. Medicine bought without a prescription can put you to sleep just as effectively as one that needs a doctor. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.42: “When you have taken any prescription drug or over-the-counter medication that can cause drowsiness”

What minimum tread depth must a tire have?

2/32 inches. Below that depth the tread stops moving water out from under the tire. On a wet road it is the difference between gripping and floating. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.42: “Tires must have at least 2/32 inches of tread depth in the proper grooves and no fabric breaks or exposed cords.”

From how far must a license plate number be visible at night?

60 feet. A frame or a film that covers the numbers defeats the point of the plate. Sixty feet is the distance it has to read from. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.43: “Your plate number must be visible from 60 feet at night.”

What rule sets a safe distance from the vehicle in front?

The three-second rule. Counting is easier than judging feet at speed, and it scales by itself: the faster you go, the more road three seconds buys. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.43: “Use the “three-second” rule to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.”

About how long does it take a driver to react and step on the brake?

Three-quarters of a second. Reaction time happens before the brakes do anything at all, and the car is still at full speed through the whole of it. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.44: “It takes about three-quarters of a second to react to a situation and step on the brake pedal.”

When must headlights and taillights be used?

From one-half hour after sunset until one-half hour before sunrise. The half hour either side is the part drivers forget. Dusk is when the eye is worst and the lights are still off. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.45: “You must use your headlights and taillights: • From one-half hour after sunset until one-half hour before sunrise”

Within what distance of an oncoming vehicle must high beams be lowered?

500 feet. The two distances are different because the mirror throws the light straight back into the other driver's eyes from closer in. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.46: “You must lower your high beam headlights to low beam when you are within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle or within 200 feet of a vehicle traveling ahead of you.”

What is the only true protection against drowsy driving?

Getting enough sleep and not driving when tired. Coffee and a nap buy a short delay and nothing more. Sleep is the only thing that takes the tiredness away. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.47: “The ONLY true way to protect yourself from drowsy driving is to get enough sleep and to not drive when you feel tired.”

When is a road often most slippery in rain?

When rain first mixes with road dirt and oil. The first few minutes are the worst, not the storm. Oil lifts off the surface before enough water arrives to wash it away. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.47: “Many roads are most slippery when rain first mixes with road dirt and oil and forms a greasy film.”

What can a driver be charged with for leaving snow and ice on the vehicle?

Negligent operation. A sheet of ice off a roof at 50 mph reaches the windshield behind you. The charge is the state saying that is foreseeable. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.48: “It is very important that you clear the roof, hood, and trunk so ice and snow does not blow into vehicles behind you. If you do not, you can be charged with negligent operation.”

What does the manual recommend carrying in the vehicle?

A safety vest, warning triangles or flares, a first aid kit, a glass breaker, and cloths. Every item on the list is for the minutes after something goes wrong at the roadside, when being seen is the whole problem. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.35: “It is recommended to carry the following items in your vehicle: • Reflective Safety Vest • Reflective Warning Triangles or LED Flares • First Aid Kit • Glass Breaker Tool • White and red cloths to tie to your vehicle during a breakdown”

What is the minimum safe passing distance for a vulnerable road user?

Four feet. Four feet is the room a cyclist needs to swerve around a pothole without being hit. Passing closer gives them nowhere to go. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.49: “you must leave a safe passing distance of at least four feet between your vehicle and the road user”

What does the White Cane Law require?

A complete stop for a blind pedestrian crossing a street. A blind pedestrian cannot see that you have slowed, only hear that you have stopped. Rolling forward is the thing that gets read as safe to cross. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.50: “The White Cane Law requires you to stop completely for a blind pedestrian crossing a street.”

What right do bicyclists and moped riders have on public roadways?

The same right to use them as all other drivers. They are traffic, not obstacles. The rights and the duties come together, which is why a cyclist running a red light is also breaking the law. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.50: “Bicyclists and moped riders have the same right to use public roadways as all other drivers”

What following distance should be used behind a motorcycle?

Four seconds. A motorcycle can stop faster than the car behind it. The extra second is the room that difference needs. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.51: “Use a four-second following distance (compared to a three-second for other motor vehicles).”

How fast may a moped be driven?

25 mph. The machine can reach thirty and the law stops you at twenty-five. The limit is about what a moped can stop from, not what it can do. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.52: “You must follow these rules when driving a moped: • Do not drive faster than 25 mph.”

What speed range defines a limited use vehicle?

Faster than 30 mph but not more than 40 mph. That band is the whole definition. Above it the machine is an ordinary vehicle; below it, it is something else again. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.53: “It can go faster than 30 mph, but not more than 40 mph.”

What can an officer do about a bicyclist who commits a traffic violation?

Issue a citation, the same as for a motorist. A bicycle on the road is traffic, so it can be ticketed like traffic. The difference is where the ticket lands afterward. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.54: “If a police officer sees a bicyclist commit a traffic violation, the officer can issue a citation the same way they would for a motorist.”

How does the manual describe driving in Massachusetts?

A privilege, not a right. A privilege can be taken back. That is the whole reason this chapter exists and why a suspension does not need a court. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.55: “Driving in Massachusetts is a privilege. It is not a right.”

How long do you have to pay a civil motor vehicle infraction or request a hearing?

20 days. Twenty days is short and the clock does not stop. Missing it is being found responsible without anybody hearing your side. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.56: “If you get a citation from a police officer for a civil motor vehicle infraction (CMVI), you must pay the required fine or request a hearing to dispute it. You have 20 days to do this.”

What does each mph above the first ten over the limit cost?

An extra $10. The first ten over is charged as one block; after that the meter runs per mile an hour. Eighteen over is nearly twice the base fine. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.57: “If you drive more than ten miles per hour (mph) over the speed limit, you must pay an extra $10 for each mph you were traveling above the first ten.”

Which of these is a criminal motor vehicle offense?

Leaving the scene of a crash. These are arrests rather than tickets. The vehicle can be towed and the license taken on the spot. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.58: “Criminal motor vehicle offenses include driving with a suspended license, operating under the influence (OUI), and leaving the scene of a crash.”

How do out-of-state violations affect a Massachusetts record?

Just as if they had happened in Massachusetts. A ticket collected on vacation follows you home. Ignoring it because it was somewhere else is how a license gets suspended. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.58: “Out-of-state motor vehicle violations impact your record just as if they occurred in Massachusetts.”

Who decides whether you are more than 50 percent at fault for a crash?

Your insurance company. The finding comes from the insurer applying its own list of standards. That is why it can land without anybody going to court. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.58: “You are more than 50 percent at fault for a crash if your insurance company”

What are surchargeable events?

Motor vehicle violations and at-fault crashes. The word covers both kinds of trouble. Counting them together is what makes three in two years add up. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.59: “Motor vehicle violations and at-fault crashes are called surchargeable events.”

What does an attested Massachusetts driving record cost?

A $20 fee. Attested means stamped as genuine, which is what another state or a court will want. The unattested copy is cheaper and not official. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.61: “The cost of an attested driving record is $20.”

What can the Registry do about a driver it sees as an immediate threat?

Suspend the permit or license immediately. No conviction is needed and no hearing comes first. The threat itself is the grounds. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.61: “If the RMV believes that your driving is an immediate threat to public safety, it can suspend your learner's permit or driver's license immediately.”

In any combination, how many major or minor moving violations in five years make a Habitual Traffic Offender?

Twelve. Twelve sounds like a lot until you count five years of small tickets. It is the slow way to the longest suspension in the chart. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.62: “any combination of twelve major or minor moving violations within a five-year period.”

What extra suspension does a Junior Operator face for a first listed serious offense?

180 days. The extra period sits on top of whatever else the law requires, and it applies to Junior Operators and nobody else. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.65: “Massachusetts General Laws chapter 90, section 24p requires that any Junior Operator who is convicted of Operating Under the Influence (OUI), Operating to Endanger, Leaving the Scene of a Crash, Drinking from an Open Alcohol Container, OUI with Serious Bodily Injury, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Reckless/ Negligent Operation, Loaning/ Allowing Another to Use Your License or Learner’s Permit, or Motor Vehicle Homicide will face a 180 day suspension (in addition to any other suspension required by law) for a first offense, or a one year suspension for any subsequent offense.”

What suspension does motor vehicle homicide bring?

15 years to lifetime. It is the longest suspension in the chart, and it is the only one that can end a driving life outright. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.66: “Motor vehicle homicide 15 years–Lifetime $500”

What must a driver do when their license is suspended?

Stop driving immediately. The suspension takes effect when it is issued, not when it is convenient. Driving on is a criminal offense of its own. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.67: “If the RMV suspends or revokes your driver's license, you must stop driving immediately.”

What kind of drug is alcohol?

A depressant. It slows everything the driving depends on while making you feel more confident about it. That combination is the danger. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.71: “It is a depressant that affects your vision, reaction time, coordination, and judgment.”

What blood alcohol content is above the legal limit?

0.08. It is the number every other alcohol rule hangs from. Above it, nothing about how well you feel matters. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.73: “You are operating above the legal limit if you have a BAC of 0.08 or higher.”

What does the Implied Consent Law require of every licensed driver?

Consent to a breathalyzer or blood test in certain cases. The consent came with the license. Refusing at the roadside is going back on something already agreed to, and it costs more than the test would. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.72: “Every licensed driver in the state must agree to consent to a breathalyzer or blood test in certain cases.”

What is the license suspension for a first operating under the influence conviction?

One year. The first offense is already a year off the road. Nothing about it is a warning. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.68: “First Offense $500–$5,000 Maximum 2 1/2 years One Year”

What is the lowest blood alcohol content that costs a driver under 21 their license?

0.02 or higher. One drink can reach 0.02 in an average person. For a driver under 21 that is the whole margin. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.73: “If you are under 21 and are caught with a BAC as low as 0.02 while driving, you will lose your license.”

Whose open alcoholic drink is an offense inside your vehicle?

Anyone's, including a passenger's. Whose drink it is does not matter. An open container in the car is the offense. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.74: “You may not have an open alcoholic drink inside your vehicle, even if someone else is holding it.”

Who must have an Ignition Interlock Device installed?

A driver with two or more operating under the influence offenses. It is not optional and the driver pays for it. The device is what a second offense buys. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.73: “If you had two or more operating under the influence offenses and are eligible for a hardship license or for license reinstatement, you must have an Ignition Interlock Device.”

What kind of offense is using a false or altered license in most cases?

A felony. It is not a licensing matter dealt with by the Registry alone. Most of these are felonies. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.74: “In most cases, these are felonies with serious penalties.”

Which drugs do the operating under the influence laws cover?

Illegal drugs, prescription medicines, and over-the-counter medicines. Illegal drugs, prescriptions and pharmacy medicines all land in the same place in law. Having a prescription is not a defense. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.74: “Laws for operating under the influence of alcohol also apply to drugs.”

What unpaid item blocks a license renewal?

Fines for parking violations. A parking ticket never reaches your driving record, and it can still stop a renewal. That is the trap in it. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.75: “The RMV will refuse to renew your license if you have... • Unpaid fines for parking violations”

About what share of motor vehicle fatalities involves speeding?

One-third. A third of the people killed died in a crash where somebody was going too fast. It is the largest single factor on the list. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.78: “About one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities involve speeding.”

What is the fundamental speed law?

Never travel so fast that it is not safe. The posted number is a ceiling, not a permission. In rain or snow the safe speed is below it and the law is the safe speed. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.79: “You must never travel so fast that it is not safe. That is the fundamental speed law.”

What is the speed limit on roads near schools?

20 mph. It is the same twenty as the speed list, said again, because drivers forget it when school is out. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.80: “The speed limit on roads near schools is 20 mph.”

What must you do before turning right on a steady red light?

Come to a complete stop and yield to pedestrians and vehicles. The right turn is allowed, the rolling stop is not. Everything that has the right-of-way goes first. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.81: “You can make a right turn on a red light only after you come to a complete stop and yield to pedestrians or other vehicles in your path.”

What does a flashing red circle mean?

The same as a STOP sign. It is a stop sign made of light. Treating it as a yield is how drivers arrive in the intersection together. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.81: “A flashing red circle means the same as a STOP sign.”

Who has the right-of-way when a crosswalk countdown reaches zero?

Pedestrians already in the crosswalk. The countdown running out does not take the crossing away from somebody halfway across it. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.82: “Pedestrians who are already in the crosswalk when the countdown reaches zero have the right-of-way.”

What does red mean on a traffic sign?

Stop or prohibition. The colors carry meaning before the words are readable. At a distance the color is all you have. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.83: “RED—stop or prohibition”

Where must a driver stop at this sign?

Before any crosswalk or stop line painted on the pavement. Stopping past the line puts the front of the car where people walk. The line is where the stop belongs. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.86: “When approaching a stop sign, you must stop before any crosswalk or stop line painted on the pavement.”

What kind of message does this sign carry?

That something is prohibited. The picture inside is the thing you may not do. Once you know the pattern you can read a sign you have never seen before. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.86: “Signs that use a red circle with a diagonal slash mean that something is prohibited.”

What does this sign tell a driver?

A hazard or change in conditions ahead. They are the one family of signs that describes the road rather than the law. Reading one early is what buys the time to act. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.86: “Yellow and fluorescent yellow-green warning signs warn you of hazards or changes in conditions ahead.”

What does this sign do?

Gives highway directions and guides you through interchanges. It is the sign that tells you where you are going. Reading it early is what saves a last-second lane change at an exit. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.86: “Green signs give highway directions and guide you through highway interchanges.”

What should a driver do at this sign?

Slow down and prepare to stop. The sign arrives before the tracks do. By the time you can see the rails there may not be room to stop short of them. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.86: “There is usually a round warning sign before a railroad crossing. When you see this sign, slow down and prepare to stop.”

How far before the light post or gate must you stop?

At least 15 feet. Fifteen feet is the room a train's overhang needs. Stopping closer puts the front of the car inside the sweep of it. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.87: “If the lights begin to flash, you must stop at least 15 feet before the light post or gate.”

What is the first thing to do when approaching a work zone?

Slow down and look for guidance. Everything else in a work zone depends on having slowed first. The signs only work if you have time to read them. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.89: “When approaching a work zone, the FIRST thing you must do is SLOW DOWN and look for guidance on how to safely travel through the area.”

What do white lane lines separate?

Lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. White always means same direction and yellow always means opposite. Getting that pair straight decodes every marking on the road. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.89: “White lane lines separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction.”

What do yellow lane lines separate?

Lanes of traffic moving in opposite directions. Yellow on your left means the traffic on the far side of it is coming toward you. That is the whole warning. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.90: “Yellow lane lines separate lanes of traffic moving in opposite directions.”

How wide is a bicycle lane?

Five feet. Five feet is barely wider than a rider. Driving in the lane for any other reason takes away the only protected space they have. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.91: “They are five feet wide.”

Where must a driver stop when required by a sign, signal, or pedestrian?

Behind the stop, yield, or crosswalk line. The line marks where the car has to end up. Stopping past it puts the front of the vehicle in the crossing. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.92: “You must stop behind the stop lines, yield lines, and crosswalk lines if required by a stop/yield sign, traffic signal, or pedestrian in the crosswalk.”
