Emergency first aid — Massachusetts Permit Test

Emergency first aid on the Massachusetts permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Do not move an injured person unless it is absolutely necessary, and if you must, fully support their head and spine.

Moving somebody with a spinal injury can do the damage the crash did not. The exception is a life-threatening situation.

Don’t move an injured person unless absolutely necessary.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.129

The first thing to check on someone hurt in a crash is whether they are breathing.

Breathing is what decides everything that follows, and checking takes two seconds. Names, insurance and the vehicle can all wait for the ambulance.

Check to see if the person is breathing.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.129

If the person is bleeding, put pressure directly on the wound and keep it there until help arrives.

Direct pressure is what stops the bleeding. Letting go to check on it is what starts it again.

If the person is bleeding, put pressure directly on the wound. Maintain pressure until help arrives.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.130

Cover an injured person with a blanket or coat to provide warmth and prevent shock.

Shock kills people the crash did not. Warmth is the one thing a bystander can do about it.

Cover the injured person with a blanket or coat to provide warmth and prevent shock.

On the test

When may an injured person be moved after a crash?

Only when it is absolutely necessary. Moving somebody with a spinal injury can do the damage the crash did not. The exception is a life-threatening situation. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.129: “Don’t move an injured person unless absolutely necessary.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
