Vision screening — Massachusetts Permit Test

Vision screening on the Massachusetts permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

An applicant for a full Class D or Class M license needs at least 20/40 visual acuity in the better eye, corrected.

Reading a sign late is the same as not reading it. The standard is set where a driver can still take in a sign in time to act on it.

your vision must be at least 20/40 visual acuity in your better eye (corrected) and at least 120 degrees of horizontal peripheral vision (both eyes together) for a full license.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.5

A full license also needs at least 120 degrees of horizontal peripheral vision with both eyes together.

Most of what a driver must catch arrives from the side. Sharp vision straight ahead does not help with a child stepping off a curb to the right.

at least 120 degrees of horizontal peripheral vision (both eyes together) for a full license

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.5

A driver whose corrected vision is between 20/50 and 20/70 in the better eye may be eligible for a daylight only license.

Vision that copes in daylight can fail after dark. The restriction keeps the driving to the hours the eyes still handle instead of taking the license away.

If your corrected vision is between 20/50 and 20/70 in the better eye, you may be eligible for a daylight only license.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.5

A driver who wears contact lenses or corrective lenses to see at a distance must wear them during the vision screening.

Screening the eyes without the lenses measures the wrong thing. The restriction on the license is supposed to match how the person actually drives.

If you normally wear contact lenses or corrective lenses to see at a distance, then you must wear them during the vision screening examination.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.4

A driver who fails, declines, or cannot take the vision screening may submit a Vision Screening Certificate completed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist.

The clerk's machine is not the only way to prove the eyes are good enough. An eye doctor's certificate does the same job.

you may submit an original RMV Vision Screening Certificate (VSC) that your ophthalmologist or optometrist has completed

On the test

What corrected visual acuity does a full Class D license require in the better eye?

20/40. Reading a sign late is the same as not reading it. The standard is set where a driver can still take in a sign in time to act on it. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.5: “your vision must be at least 20/40 visual acuity in your better eye (corrected) and at least 120 degrees of horizontal peripheral vision (both eyes together) for a full license.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
