Rules for passing — Massachusetts Permit Test

Rules for passing on the Massachusetts permit test — 9 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

The law requires you to drive on the right side of the road, and where passing is allowed you should pass on the left.

Passing on the left is the default because that is where the driver being passed is looking for you.

When passing is allowed, you should pass on the left.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.102

You may not exceed the speed limit when passing.

Passing is not an exception to the speed limit. A pass that needs one was not safe to start.

You may not exceed the speed limit when passing.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.102

Never use a breakdown lane, the shoulder of a road, or a sidewalk for passing another vehicle.

Those spaces hold broken-down cars, people and bicycles. Nobody in them expects a car at speed.

Never use a breakdown lane, the shoulder of a road, or a sidewalk for passing another vehicle.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.102

Crossing a broken yellow line to pass means you must be able to see clearly at least 400 feet in front of you.

Four hundred feet is the room for you and an oncoming car to both cover ground while you are in the wrong lane.

If you are crossing a broken yellow line to pass, you must be able to see clearly at least 400 feet in front of you.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.103

You must return to the right lane before any oncoming vehicle comes within 200 feet of you.

Two hundred feet closes in under two seconds at combined highway speeds. The pass has to be finished before then.

You must return to the right lane before any oncoming vehicle comes within 200 feet of you.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.103

Before moving back into the right lane after passing, wait at least until you can see the passed vehicle's headlights in your mirror.

The headlights in the mirror are the proof that there is a car's length of road behind you. Anything sooner cuts them off.

Wait at least until you can see the vehicle's headlights in your mirror.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.103

If you are being passed you must slow down and stay to the right, and you must not speed up.

Speeding up makes the pass take longer and leaves the other driver stuck in the oncoming lane.

If you are being passed by another vehicle, you must slow down and stay to the right.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.103

Do not pass vehicles that are stopped or turning, at intersections or anywhere else.

They may be stopped for somebody you cannot see. That is the whole reason the rule exists.

They may be stopped for another vehicle, a person, or an animal that you cannot see.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.104

You should pass a pedestrian, bicyclist, or motor vehicle only when it is necessary and safe, and if you have any doubt, do not pass.

The manual sets the bar at necessary rather than convenient. Doubt is a reason to stay where you are.

You should pass a pedestrian, bicyclist, or motor vehicle only when it is necessary and safe to do so.

On the test

Which side should a driver pass on?

The left. Passing on the left is the default because that is where the driver being passed is looking for you. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.102: “When passing is allowed, you should pass on the left.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
