License and identification fees — Massachusetts Permit Test

License and identification fees on the Massachusetts permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

The road test fee is $35, and it is charged even if you fail, do not appear, are rejected, or cancel with less than 72 hours notice.

The fee buys the slot rather than the result. Every way of not using the slot costs the same thing.

Road test fee - $35.00

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.32

A Class D or Class M license issue or renewal fee is $50.

The fee is what the state charges to make a tamper-resistant card. It is not the exam and not the road test, which are billed on their own.

License issue/renew fee - Class D - $50.00

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.32

A duplicate or amended license costs $25.

Any change that makes the Registry print a new card carries the same fee, whether it is a lost license or a new address.

Duplicate or amended license - $25.00

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.32

All license fees are non-refundable.

Paying for a test you then fail buys nothing back. Every fee in this section is spent when it is paid.

All license fees are non-refundable.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.32

Disabled Veterans pay no fees for driver's license transactions if they have or qualify for Disabled Veteran plates.

The exemption covers the transactions, not just one of them. Qualifying with Medical Affairs is enough; the plates do not have to be on a car yet.

Disabled Veterans do not pay any fees for driver's license transactions if they have Disabled Veteran plates or if they have qualified for Disabled Veteran plates with Medical Affairs.

On the test

What is the Massachusetts road test fee?

A $35 fee. The fee buys the slot rather than the result. Every way of not using the slot costs the same thing. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.32: “Road test fee - $35.00”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
