Window tint and extra lights — Massachusetts Permit Test
Window tint and extra lights on the Massachusetts permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
You may darken side and rear windows up to 35 percent, and tinting the windshield is illegal.
The windshield is the one piece of glass the driver has to see through in every condition. Dark side glass also hides whether a driver has seen you.
You can darken your side and rear windows up to 35 percent. It is illegal to tint your windshield.
Emergency lights are not allowed on a vehicle unless you get a permit from the Registry.
Flashing lights on an ordinary car tell other drivers something untrue. The permit is the state deciding who is allowed to say it.
Emergency lights (flashing, rotating, oscillating, or strobe lights) are not allowed on a vehicle unless you get a permit from the RMV.
A spot light may only be used to read signs or as an emergency light when the headlights are not working.
It is a tool, not a second headlight. Sweeping it across traffic blinds the drivers it lands on.
A passenger vehicle may have a spot light that can only be used to read signs or as an emergency light if the headlights are not working.
On the test
How far may side and rear windows be darkened?
Up to 35 percent. The windshield is the one piece of glass the driver has to see through in every condition. Dark side glass also hides whether a driver has seen you. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.34: “You can darken your side and rear windows up to 35 percent. It is illegal to tint your windshield.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
