Sign colors — Massachusetts Permit Test

Sign colors on the Massachusetts permit test — 8 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

On a traffic sign, red means stop or prohibition and green means direction, showing where you can go.

The colors carry meaning before the words are readable. At a distance the color is all you have.

RED—stop or prohibition

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.83

Yellow on a traffic sign means general warning, and black on white means regulation.

Yellow tells you something is coming; black and white tells you what the law requires here.

YELLOW—general warning

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.83

Blue on a traffic sign means motorist service, such as gas, food, or hotels, or an evacuation route.

Blue is the color to look for when you need something rather than when the road needs something of you.

BLUE—motorist service (e.g., gas, food, hotels), evacuation route

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.83

Brown on a traffic sign means a recreational, historic, or scenic site.

Brown is the color of the places you are going for their own sake rather than passing through.

BROWN—recreational, historic, or scenic site

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.83

Orange on a traffic sign means a construction or maintenance warning.

Orange means people are working within feet of the traffic lane. The speeding fine doubles where it is posted.

ORANGE—construction or maintenance warning

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.83

Fluorescent yellow-green on a traffic sign means a school zone, bicycle, pedestrian, or curve warning.

It is the brightest color on the roadside and it is used for the things most easily hit.

FLUORESCENT YELLOW-GREEN—school zone, bicycle, pedestrian, and curve warning

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.83

Fluorescent pink on a traffic sign means an incident management sign, and purple means electronic toll collection.

Two colors most drivers have never been told about. Pink appears where something has just happened on the road ahead.

FLUORESCENT PINK—incident management signs

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.83

Knowing signs by their appearance is what lets you recognize them at a distance.

Shape and color arrive long before the lettering does. That is the point of the plate on this page.

Know signs by their appearances so you can recognize them at a distance.

Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.85

On the test

What does red mean on a traffic sign?

Stop or prohibition. The colors carry meaning before the words are readable. At a distance the color is all you have. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.83: “RED—stop or prohibition”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
