Stalling on railroad tracks — Massachusetts Permit Test
Stalling on railroad tracks on the Massachusetts permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
If your vehicle stalls on railroad tracks and a train is coming, get everyone out of the vehicle immediately and move as far from the tracks as you can.
Nothing in the car is worth the seconds. Everything else about the situation comes after everybody is out.
Get everyone out of the vehicle IMMEDIATELY and move as far from the tracks as you can.
Run at a 45 degree angle away from the tracks, in the direction the train is coming from, to avoid being hit by wreckage.
The wreckage is thrown forward along the track. Running toward the train and away at an angle puts you behind it.
To avoid being hit by wreckage, run in a 45 degree angle away from the tracks in the direction that the train is coming, then immediately call 911.
If the vehicle stalls on tracks and no train is coming, roll down the window or open the door and listen for a train.
The engine is off, so listening is the one thing that works. A train is audible long before it is visible.
Roll down your window or open your door and listen for a train.
If the vehicle will not start, shift to neutral and try to push it off the tracks.
Neutral is what makes a car pushable. In gear it will not move at all.
If your vehicle won’t start, shift to neutral and try to push the vehicle off the tracks.
If you cannot move the vehicle off the tracks, call the Emergency Notification System number located in the middle of the crossbuck or on the metal box near the crossing.
That number reaches the railroad dispatcher, who can stop the trains. Calling 911 alone does not.
If you cannot move your vehicle from the tracks, call the toll free Emergency Notification System (ENS) number that is located in the middle of the crossbuck or on the metal box near the grade crossing.
Give the railroad dispatcher the DOT grade crossing locator number from the sign, and say that a vehicle is on the tracks.
The number tells them which crossing out of thousands. Without it the call cannot stop anything.
Give the railroad dispatcher the DOT grade crossing locator number that is also on the sign.
On the test
What is the first thing to do when a vehicle stalls on tracks with a train coming?
Get everyone out and move away from the tracks. Nothing in the car is worth the seconds. Everything else about the situation comes after everybody is out. Massachusetts Driver's Manual, p.125: “Get everyone out of the vehicle IMMEDIATELY and move as far from the tracks as you can.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
